My mom is talking about flying into san antonio and me picking her up to go around the texas hill country. I don't know much about the area, but it seems kind of like an old person's vacation setting. Would it be fun for a 32 year old dude like me & my mid twenties gf?

Any recommendations on places to see/eat?

Got a motorcycle, car you like driving, bicycle? Otherwise I have no idea what there is to enjoy besides the scenery.

My parents live in Comfort. Depending on what you're into, you can enjoy the Fredricksburg wine trail, there's a lot of antique and boutique shopping in Fredricksburg, as well as Boerne. There's a lot of historical stuff out that way as well, you have Johnson City, and a lot of those little towns have German / Polish heritage museums. Also, if she comes out soon, there's the Texas wildflowers, which can make the hills look like rolling ocean waves.

I take it you live in Austin?

I'm south of san antonio. Will the wildflowers still be there in late may?

This visit is about your Mom and not about you. :colbert:

The Hill Country is full of fake antique shops and little towns of German heritage. Lots of good wine and food in the Hill Country, but there is nothing exciting about it. It is a pleasant way to kill a day. You drive slowly, you walk slowly, you eat slowly, you buy a used pot & pan set or Texas Star wall decoration for way too much money, you take lots of pictures and Mom goes home happy.

Also, if you are thinking of making your GF into something more, this is the perfect opportunity for Mom and GF to bond. If Mom and GF bond and you guys break up, you'll never hear the end of it from your Mom. 27 years from now she'll remind you of what a great time she had "With that Jenny-girl you used to date."

It's can certainly be a mom-type trip.

Fredericksburg is the German town with all the antiques shops and stuff. There is good food and wineries though. Also a world war 2 museum that's pretty decent.

The hill country is gorgeous. Lots of good outdoor activities: hiking, biking, climbing, tubing, etc.

There a handful of places to get really good Texas barbecue. The Salt Lick in Dripping Springs is the first place that comes to mind.

There is some good advice in this thread so far. I'm confused though, do you already live in the area and need advice for the mother to have fun but just aren't familiar with those kinds of things? Are you just new to the area in general? Are you flying in to show her around? As far as the gf and you, there is TONS to do but not necessarily if you are dragging your mother around.

Everyone says Salt Lick can be a bit overrated - but why not go for a top 3 burger in TX? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Alamo-Springs-Cafe/120990493518

We love that place, their jalapeno cheese bun is awesome.

My wife and I hit Hill Country for a day several years back. We were in our late 20's at the time and had a blast. We mainly did the wine trail. It was great. Pay $5 and get about 5 different glasses of wine to try. Sit out on a deck or patio, enjoy the sun and chat it up with a random other couple that's there too.

Not a place that's worth more than a day or two unless you hit some of the hiking trails while you are there.
