Kimberly McCarthy was the 500th person Texas has executed since 1982.

500 people / 31 years = 16.129 people per year.

16.129 / 12 months = just 1.34 people per month.

How is the death penalty supposed to be a deterrent if we only execute 16 people a year?

Texas's murder rate is 4.4.

My state Wisconsin has no death penalty, our murder rate is 2.4.

The death penalty does not prevent or reduce murders. Legalized drugs, legalized prostitution, easy access to abortions for unwanted babies, etc... all would have a more positive impact on the murder rate than the death penalty.

For 2011, the average Murder Rate of Death Penalty States was 4.7, while the average Murder Rate of States without the Death Penalty was 3.1
For 2010, the average Murder Rate of Death Penalty States was 4.6, while the average Murder Rate of States without the Death Penalty was 2.9
For 2009, the average Murder Rate of Death Penalty States was 4.9, while the average Murder Rate of States without the Death Penalty was 2.8
For 2008, the average Murder Rate of Death Penalty States was 5.2, while the average Murder Rate of States without the Death Penalty was 3.3

Should be more imo.

This. If you really want to deter people from doing hidious crimes you need to make the punishment death for all murders, and not 3 meals a day, warm bed, tv, education etc all on someone elses dime. That is better living than most inner cities.

Maybe the states with high murder rates, placed the death penalty because of it. I can't think of any logic that would say having the death penalty would increase murder rates. Do you think if Wisconsin adopted the death penalty the murder rate would go up?

It never was a deterrent. Always been about retribution.

Especially in Texas.

You can sit there and show the facts about how it costs more with appeals and how its not a good deterrent, and people will simply tell you all that doesn't matter.

EDIT: Or how racist it is (look at Texas's death row demographics).

Why do people in Texas think executing people is such a cause for celebration?

correlation does not equal causation. Wisconsin has has a cheese eating rate of 5.1 and Texas has a cheese eating rate of 3.2.

So if we eat more cheese, we kill less people?

Several months ago I had to shoot a mangy stray dog that was chasing my chickens. I felt bad for the dog. It was probably just hungry and looking for a meal. The stray dog was doing what predators do, they eat other animals, and my chickens probably looked like a quick easy meal. I felt remorse for the dog, and I felt sorry for it. I apologized to the dog for having to shoot it and petted its dead body for a few minutes to show a final act of kindness.

People on the other hand, they have a choice. Killing for drugs or for money is not natural.

Killing for fun is the sign of a diseased mind.

I feel no remorse when a killer is put down, nor do I feel sorry for them.

The dog did not have a choice in what it was doing. Chasing a prey animal just came naturally.

With people, robbing, killing and raping is a choice.

~ EDIT ~

When you see a dead animal on the side of the road, do you think the animal knew better then to walk in front of a car?

Would we expect an adult to know better than to walk in front of a moving car?

Why should the death penalty be any different than someone stepping in front of a moving 18 wheeler?

Wisconsin is also pretty far removed from the southern border. Not a realistic comparison.

...and free anal rapes/random beatings by 300 lb black men. Can't really put on a value on the anal rapes, they are priceless.

And Gov. "pro-life under any circumstances" Perry has no problem ordering killing people. But if all 500 of the people under discussion had been aborted, saving 500 or more other lives, he would have a problem with that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin#Demographics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas#Demographics

WI: 83.3% non-hispanic white
TX: 44.8% non-hispanic white

I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Nice guess but UTTERLY wrong. The following is the WHITE murder rate by state. Wisconsin is a moderate to progressive state that is NOT radicalized around gun rights like the highly conservative Texas.

Texas 4.38
Wisconsin 1.34
