Texas Halts Crackdown on Drunks in Bars

Reuters
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 14) - A controversial Texas program to send undercover agents into bars to arrest drunks has been halted after a firestorm of protest from the public.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has "temporarily suspended" what it called "Operation Last Call" even though it still believes it was worthwhile, commission spokeswoman Carolyn Beck said on Thursday.

"We understand that everything has room for improvement, this included," she said.

She said most of those arrested in the sting operations had been "dangerously drunk" and might have tried to drive if TABC agents had not busted them.

The TABC has launched an internal investigation of Operation Last Call and a Texas Legislature committee will hold hearings on the program on Monday.

The TABC announced the program in late August but it received little attention at the time.

But recent media reports that drunks were being arrested in bars provoked both ridicule and anger around the world and, perhaps more importantly, complaints from hotels, restaurants and bars in Texas who said it could hurt business.

The program drew support from groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The Houston Chronicle found that 1,740 people across the state had been arrested for public intoxication in Operation Last Call.

Thank goodness. That program was f&^king stupid. I saw on the news that they arrested a tourist who was drinking downstairs in the hotel bar. After getting wasted, she was going up to her room for the night and they arrested her for being drunk.

WTF?

Yeah, that was incredibly stupid. In this "free country" of ours, let's arrest people who might commit a crime.

I think the point of the program was good, the enforcement bad. I live in Texas and frequent all the hotspots for drinking around the Dallas area. Assuming the main purpose was to stop drunk drivers from getting on the road, yea who doesn't support it? But if you're going to stop people from getting drunk and they're not driving and not doing anything wrong (the hotel case) then thats just stupid.

Oh - I bet they pulled this sh!t in Uptown. (The fancy/rich part of Dallas) Bet they arrested someone fairly affluent and now have a few top name lawyers breathing down their neck, hence of the reasons why they pulled it.

Nope, it was all targeted in the not so nice areas like Arlington.

The political\financial clout held by the businesses of Addison would have ended these arrests instantly if anything had happened there, but TABC was smart enough to stay away from that area.

What they were doing was arresting people before they did anything wrong. They were ASSuming that they were going to drive.

This country doesn't work that way, and I'm sure some lawyers will become very rich because of this unconstitutional abuse of power.

They were arresting people for being "Drunk in public" because there wasn't anything in the state law that prevented it.

I'm glad to see that stupidity has stopped though. How can they always be certain that thier 'suspect' didn't have a designated driver?
