I managed to get out before the traffic got too insane (If you can call driving for 12 hours to go 100 miles not insane).

We made it to Segovia Texas at 7:00am and stay at our hotel until noon when we had to check out. We then went to Alpine, TX which was the closest hotel reservation we could get for a few days. Alpine is 600 miles away.

I am driving to Georgetown tomorrow and then flying from Austin back to Houston on Sunday to see if there is damage. The wife and animals will be coming back via car once the traffic into Houston has cleared.

Wow, traffic disaster there. Texas was supposed to be better but it clearly was not.

Houston on west side of the strom and a lot of dry air was puuled in so it should be minimized. A lot of trees, poles etc will be down from Northwest to Southeast in direction.
Actually when you consider that over 2.5 million people evacuated Houston, I think they did a remarkable job. I think they could have made the decision to open up both sides of the major freeways to outbound traffic sooner, but there is no way that many people could be evacuated without major traffic problems. The sad thing is that people in Beaumont and Port Arthur were so focused on us and Galveston that I am afraid more people will be caught there than should have been.

Glad to hear Crazee and others are clear. It appears Rita has weakened but there is still a lot of water heading ashore. That ride to Dallas had to be pure hell. Stay safe everyone.

.................

Last weekend the cleanup crews snatched the big phone cable that feeds my whole sub-division when they started removing the fallen trees in our area. I have been without phone service since.

I just got a pleasant surprise. Our burglar alarm went off a few minutes ago when my wife dropped a stainless steel bowl in our kitchen area (setting off the glass break). It has gone off more than once in the last week but with no phone service, the security monitoring service never received a call. Just now, the monitoring service called! I was never so happy to hear the phone ring. At first I picked up the cell phone. lol

You don't realize how much you use the internet until you are without it for almost a week.

.....................

Good luck to all of you in the path of Rita and play it safe .

Great to see you posting Greg 🙂

Houston was spared being on the west side but Lafayette to the Louisiana border especially Lake Charles has been slammed.

I just got power back on at my house about an hour ago.😀

My house in League City was spared, I had a small tree blow down (only been in the ground 4 months), but other than that, no issues.

We were able to drive back early afternoon, and arrived home to no power at our house, but power at the neighbors...just my luck that my house started a new electrical circuit. But I was able to run an extension cord from teh neighbors to my deep feeze, thus savings a lot of food.

All in all, I feel that I dodged a huge bullet, a coworker of mine who lives on the NE side of houston sustained a lot of propoerty damage, and one of his neighbors had a tree fall through the roof.

Glad to hear most of the other mates are ok, and my best wishes go out to anyone in the Lake Charles area as they were pounded by this storm.

We just got home from Waco, TX. about a 4 hr drive, took us 7, not too bad if you think about how many
people are headed home. We bought a map at Barnes and Noble that showed all of the back roads of TX,
and took them back home. Almost no traffic! HWY 6 was dead stopped 10 miles South of Waco, so I'm
glad the DW (Dear Wife) convinced me to buy the road atlas of back roads. Got home, no damage, turned the A/C
on and I'm typing this before I head off to bed. I have to got to work and try to get some groceries shipped
to stores that badly need them! Good to hear from all of you, especially from Smokeball, Slatzman, and others
misplaced by the storm.

God Bless,
HayHauler

Well, from the news I see that the worst has passed. Thank the Lord for that and all His small (and big) blessings ...
Lets now hope - and pray for - that this was the last hurricane for this season. Although I know that the hurricane season has not passed and that the imbalance of the weather forces may not be restored yet ... 🙁
