(CNN) -- Students at a community college in Houston are taking shelter after reports of a gunman on campus. More than 10,000 students are at the North Harris Campus of Lone Star College, a spokesman said.

Police and emergency responders swarmed an entrance to the campus, aerial video from CNN affiliate KPRC showed.

was sitting here researching on what to get as my first gun and this came on.

Locked because some people don't realize they're in Off Topic.

Looks like an altercation between two armed men, not a "school shooting".

Not that I care either way.

Aren't there many, many laws against murder and assault with a deadly weapon already on the books? Aren't most school, colleges and universities already federally/state mandated Gun Free Zones?

How the hell could something like this even be possible?

Why is this news? Everybody knows Texas is a open carry state, nobody would dare pull this shit in public in fear of immediate retribution of bullet to the head from all the elite marksmen. /rolleyes

I know you are being saracastic, but Texas does it right. It is a shall issue CCW state but open carry is illegal.

Obviously not. Gun proliferation outside of that Zone is where the problem lies for any Gun Free Zone.

But doesn't the border of the Gun Free Zone magically stop guns from passing within? It's that why we mandated them for schools and such? Because something had to be done to keep our children safe?

If their actually had been a shooting, I think it would be a hell of a lot safer in the company of a random CCW holders than within the protection of any "Gun Free Zone".

They are an attempt to prevent something that can't be prevented given the culture that surrounds them. Society at large needs to embrace the Gun Free Zone concept before local Gun Free Zones will work as intended.

Society at large embraced the drug free zone concept. I don't think criminals care what society at large embraces.
