So my school district has decided to change the name of the "Foreign Language" departments to "Languages Other Than English" department. WTF? I thought Tejas was supposed to be filled with anti-PC bubbas?

Are you saying it's because, technically, no language is foreign since someone in the world speaks it? I don't see where the PC part comes in.

It's kinda like how people started saying "in no particular order" instead of "random order" since anything that's random can't have order to it. We all understand what they mean, but technically it's more correct to say it the new way.

Hispanics have a lot of clout now (they compose a majority of the population in most of the southern districts).

They are not necessarily PC, they just don't like their language referred to as a foreign language since it is so widely used down here.

I think he means it's not a foreign language because nearly everyone speaks in there. It's still stupid to change the name.

Sidenote: In my highschool they did the daily announcements over the PA in both English and Spanish. That really pissed me off. If you're going to go to an American school, learn English.

Please tell me you're joking.

Instead of flying to a foreign country, I'm now flying to "a country other than the United States".

But... Spanish IS a foreign language. So are French and Italian and Chinese. The language of the US is English. It's not a matter of being PC... It's just a fact. :p

Oh well. Our Texas schools suck anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

As a hispanic, I msut say that I agree with you.

This nation will only give yo so much. YOu ahve to put effort into the American dream if not devote your entire life. Hell, I was somewhat pressured to learn French and had no problem with it,.

It would seem to me that most every hispanic person I know respects the unspoken requirement of learning english and knows the consequences of not doign so.

It is just these lazy pricks in some parts of the country that rely to heavily on "group mentality" and pressure and eventual peer pressure from zealots and their followers

Wow, I just noticed my profile. That's definetly the wrong state, and I don't know how. I'm from Northern California, which I guess makes more sense, but it still pissed me off

Does the US actually HAVE an offical language? or is English the de facto standard? I thought I had seen somewhere that there is no offical language in any laws.

Could be wrong though

There wasn't in FL. A few years back we passed a law or ammendment to make English the official language. Was (IIRC) becoming an issue w/ signs and materials for public things, like street signs, school books, etc. If there was no official language I think groups could, in theory, sue or put pressure on govn to supply equal education to other languages (spanish).

Fact eh, I was pretty sure there wasn't an official language in the US, which is why I'm seeing everything in English and Spanish down here. Lemme do a little checking.

edit: No official language of the US.

I didn't mean that it was official by law -- I meant that traditionally everyone here speaks it. Heck, I live in a part of town where I have to read everything in a mix of English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Aye. There will be zealots of every race, creed, color, and member length:D

Basically, there are always guys out there that were born "lacking" and lust for the power: the only thing that will get them some:D

OK, you day the language of the US is english, because "traditionally everyone here speaks." Then you say "I have to read everything in a mix of English, Spanish, and Chinese."

My question is, if you already have to read things in XYZ languages, when can people using those languages say the same thing?

I *already* have been seeing things in spanish for a while...
