Texans to not know how to drive in ice (Austin)

I was just coming home from work, 8pm, and went my usual way home but when i got to the bridge at mopac at parmer the line stopped moving despite green lights.

Everyone is sitting in their car waiting for something magical to happen so I get out my car to look and i notice people not moving on the bridge.

When I got closer I saw that people were trying to cross the bridge and were sliding sideways and every other direction. Some people ran into the side of the bridge and a few made it across.

The crazy thing is that the people who werent on the bridge, were watching everyone sliding all around and waiting for their turn to try to cross the bridge!!

I dont understand why people want to cross an icy bridge instead of taking a 4 minute detour to go around it.

Has anyone ever had any crazy ice driving experiences?

I saw someone go through an intersection as they spun 360 degrees, recovered and drove on like it was nothing (Home in Michigan)

I'm over in London for the semester - we're missing the big ice storm. Got all kinds of e-mails from UT - school closed, library closed, buses not running, etc. As a native Texan, I can just tell you that most people down here just have no clue how to drive in snow/ice. I lived in Georgia for a few years and it was the same thing - in the deep South you just don't see it enough to get used to it (for most people).

Should try coming to Canada in the winter.

You learn to drive for any road condition imaginable.

no matter how much youre used to driving in these conditions, youll have no hope surviving the dumb people who will run into you 🙂

We thought we'd share it with the US.

Been there, done that. 🙂 Illinois winters aren't much better than Michigan winters.

Don't they very often put salt on those things on/before cold days?

yes? But it takes a while to cover all the roads

No? At least not when I was in Dallas 3 years ago. They put sand down instead of salt which is about as useless as doing nothing at all. Yay! Now it's not just ice slush on the road, its sandpapery, dirty, and paint finish ruining ice slush!

Yeah, tried to turn in too fast into a street entrance for a fast food joint. Ended up spinning 180 and facing a city snowplow bearing up on me. I Punched the pedal, turned the wheel, and yanked the e-brake to spin me back around. I still don't understand how I got the traction to avoid being demolished.
