You can now use PdaNet to tether your iphone's 3g connection through your USB cable. Before you had to set up an ad-hoc network and performance was sometimes shoddy. Now download the desktop client here: Link, have it install the dial-up modem driver, and just click Connect. Simple as that.
The only thing is, it's free with full functionality for 14 days with the newest update. After 14 days, the application will only allow HTTP transfers, which is fine for most people.
