Remember Indus Drives? 40 M for about $400. Replaced my Atari hard drives. Had some 20M or smaller drives also.

Storage (and RAM) is amazingly low today.

SSDs are probably the best upgrade right now for any computer. I just find it painful using a system that has the OS stored on a hard drive. Takes so long to boot.

I'm still of the opinion though that hard drives are better for mass archival storage due to their lower cost per gigabyte. You'd see no noticeable performance boost storing video on an SSD vs a hard drive for example. So might as well go for the cheaper option.

Danger zone! ISIS did get shut down by the FBI at the beginning of Archer Vice. They've retired the name though. Archer is supposed to be working for the CIA next season.

I use a SSD (Samsung 830 128GB) for my boot drive as well. The thing formatted and installed Windows 7 in something like 30 minutes. Windows boots in about 15 seconds. However I use a 1TB WD Caviar Black for my games.

Can't wait for 1TB SSDs to drop below $200.

SSDs have really come down in price. 120Gb is ~$50. 240Gb is ~$80-120. 1TB has been ~$320 in the last few weeks.

I paid like $120 for my 180gb which was a Intel 330 series.$240 was what my first 60gb cost.Both were worth it.I went from 60gb to 90gb to the 180gb.180gb cost me just as much as the 90gb did lol.

SSD drives are fun,the longer you wait the better and cheaper they get.Average joe me is happy with the speed but additional space would be awesome.

It depends if you use a DVD to install or a bootable flashdrive with the ISO.

With a flash drive I can do a full install in 10 maybe 15 minutes to an SSD. With DVD installation it still takes some time, even when installing to an SSD.


I got a 120GB SSD for $149 in 2011 or so, ended up selling it with a laptop (as the boot drive), when I built my desktop I got a 240GB SSD for around $180. Got a second 240GB SSD on sale for $150 a few months later, and about 6 months after that I picked up a 480GB SSD for $200.

I have kept one 240GB SSD and the 480GB SSD in my desktop, and I put the other 240GB SSD in my PS4, cause fuck it. why not.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Having your operating system, applications and your most used data and files on SSD gives a huge performance boost. On my desktop system a 128GB drive is at least twice as large as I need for that, and a 128 can be had for very cheap.

I'm simply not going for the early-adopter pricing. I don't shutdown/boot my PC everyday (reboot once every 2 weeks) and really the only app I consistently have to run is Chrome so it's not a huge deal to me. If it loaded my games faster then perhaps I'd strongly consider it (someone said it won't?). And a new OS while I'm at it.

I'm still on Vista too. Rest assured, next need for an upgrade I'm all over it. Just don't see a need yet with how I use my PC (play videos with MPC, streaming server to tablets/roku, google play music, browsing, 1 or 2 large games, storing and uploading pics/vids with OneDrive). None of those except Chrome is on my boot drive. Correct me if I'm wrong in seeing benefits.

We're not at early adopter pricing. SSD's have been at reasonable prices for at least 2 years now. They're more expensive than Hard Drives, but when you're getting 10x the performance of one, you would expect SSD's to be more expensive.

Also games load much MUCH faster on an SSD.

What early adopter pricing? We haven't seen that in at least a year or two, if not longer. If you expect them to be on parity with HDDs, that's illogical and just not going to happen.

Also, games DO load faster, people telling you they don't load faster are uninformed, now I will freely admit there are tons of games that wont benefit from an SSD, but games with long load times will certainly be improved, games that have frequent loading screens will also be faster. It's the games that already run fast on HDDs because they aren't loading huge files that you wont see much of an improvement.




You're obviously free to do what you like, but the largest bottle neck in your system is your hard drive, period. And once you DO switch to an SSD, good luck ever trying to go back to an HDD, you will want to kill yourself.

If you want to see improvements to specific games, they will need to be installed to the SSD. However, just having your OS loaded onto the SSD would give you an all around better feeling computer.

And SATAII is fine, most modern SSDs will max it out, but not by a TON. It just means when you upgrade to SATA 3 you can bring the SSD with you and it will be even faster.
