Testing stability of OC

I am about to venture into OCing for the first time and was wondering what is the best way to test the stability of the OC.

I have read and heard all manners of things been said, but i do not really understand and what ever i do read is confusing since it normally is with the premise that we already know something. which i do not.

so any help, advice on what to use and how to use it to test. and what to look out for would be much appreciated. and if you can post pics of what i should see on screen would be a bonus.
