Testing PSU, what precautions should I take?

I'm testing to see if my late power supply is the fault of my computer suddenly dying a few days ago. I want to switch it out and try another one, but I'm afraid of burning out the new power supply as well, just in case there was short on the motherboard somewhere. I have a Duron 800 on an Abit kt7 with an Antec PP-303X 300W PSU. I don't know why my PSU burned out, I'm just guessing it was faulty upon shipment. But anyway, before I test out the new power supply and blame the fault that my computer died on my old supply, what should I disconnect and what should I leave in for testing?
