Sometimes I go out and setup some dsl at businesses. Sometimes they've ordered service on a line that runs into their PBX though. Seldom is there any documentation either as to which line is which. So I'm faced with a large punchdown block with multiple lines running into it and no idea which one has the dsl carrier on it. I feel quite uncomfortable hacking on their phone system so I usually make them cancel the order and have it installed on an easy to find line, like a fax line.

I wish I had a butt/test set that handled dsl so I could just clip onto the terminals on the block, but I don't nor do I have the money to get one. I was thinking about snipping the end off a phone cord and putting some small alligator clips on it. Run the other end to the modem, and go through and clip it onto the lines at the punch down block and see if the modem synchs. Sound look a good idea? Better ideas?
