Testing how many watts my sytem is using?

In a couple of the new reviews that are here I see that there are power requirement graphs that show how much wattage a compter is pulling; eg. confirms that precotts pull the most power

i was wondering how this can be tested and if I could do the same to my system
are these tests software or hardware based? and how accurate are they?

I could think of plenty of uses for something like this....

Go to Radio Shack. Buy a "Kill-A-Watt" wattage meter. Plug computer into meter. Voila! Very accurate wattage readings. 🙂
