Yes, it works. Make sure the head unit isn't drawing more than the 12v rail can put out. I've used a PC Power and Cooling 1000 watt unit to power a head unit and a 4 channel amp at moderate volumes.
You can hook it straight to a car battery...run jumper leads from the +12v always hot (yellow) and +12v switched hot (red) in the harness for the HU to the pos terminal on the battery, and the ground (black) to the neg.
All you need is a +12v DC source with enough current output to run the head unit.
Cool. Just hooked it up to my spare PSU and it worked. I connected both the 12v constant and 12v switched wires from the HU's harness the 12V DC (yellow wire) from the PSU's 20-pin connector and then the ground from the HU's harness to a ground wire from the PSU's 20-pin connector. The HU fired up just as if it were connected to the car.
