Testing fuel for alcohol content

I may have to do a littler comparison of the local gas... My car performs differently from different stations with the same octane rating (proven on the data logger, different levels of KR and such). I wonder which ones have more alcohol?

Am I the only one that saw this and initially thought "Tasting fuel for alcohol content"

Wouldn't a better way be to burn it.. and calculate the amount of energy it puts out?
