Testing a new motherboard to put away as a spare

I am very happy with my current setup for video editing, but since the MB is discontinued and 65nm processors are almost discontinued, I picked up a newer spare motherboard that handles both 65nm and 45nm CPUs.

All I want to do is test the mothertboard before the warranty expires then put it away until this one dies or I feel like upgrading.

I have the original CD retail version of Windows XP Pro that has been updated and running SP2 on my main machine. That's the way I want to leave it.

I have enough spare parts to build a temporary rig for testing this new motherboard, but I was told to use Kubuntu on a "live" CD to test it rather than mess with Microsoft and it's hardware change requirements or "deactivate it first then install it on your new rig".

Do you guys here agree with that recommendation (Using a Kubuntu Live CD)?

Thanks very much.

I love these test rigs!

That way, you can make good use of your "spare parts"...

I love that test bench and thanks for the confirmation regarding Kubuntu.
