I need an easy way to test someone's analog modem. Because I don't have dial-up Internet access anymore, it's difficult for me to find a way to test an analog modem. Any ideas?

For a limited test, you should be able to get a connection with any local ISP's dialup number at least for a short time until the login attempt fails. And most towns still have a few BBS systems running (check w/ your local library). You can use HyperTerminal to connect with one of those. Or if you still have a modem in your pc, you could dial into your own computer as Hyperterminal can be set up to answer the phone. That will only test up to 33.6 because only someone like an ISP can do v90 speed (up to about 50kbps downstream. And there still are free web access companies (Tallahassee and other cities have Freenet - check w/ your library). Just set up an acct. with one of those.

Whenever I install a modem or set up a new computer I use hyperterminal. I just dial my cell phone number. If you don't have a cell just dial any number that you know someone will answer.

you can also run the basic diagnostics provided in windows. Go to "Start", "Settings", Control Panel, Modem, Advanced, Diagnose. It will test the modem's ability to work at least.
