tested that HD and ddr mem in my comp...

Remember I was mlahhing about my bro's HD being slow a little while ago? well I decided to verify the HD, and the memory also. First I just stuck the HD in and ran HD tach. I got 80MB/s burst, 30MB/s average and 36MB/s max read speed and 15.7ms random access time! What the ?! My old Quantum gets 11ms!

It's a new 40GB 7200rpm Maxtor drive...

I'm completely out of ideas and I'm gonna exchange it for a new one unless you guys can convince me not to. 😉

The ddr mem seems fast. I took out my 256 pc133 and stuck in my bro's 512 ddr, and everything is a lot quicker, less hd crunching... games affected big time (it would be choppy at first when the HD would crunch, and it would crunch like hell when I exit the game.. no more of that at all).

So the memory seems good.. It's just the HD like I thought. But it's faster in my comp than in my bro's.. I don't get it? It's still way too slow though.

I figured it out.

Have a look at this : link

And have a look at this : link

See the specs? It says 5400rpm. We specifically ordered a 7200rpm.

grrr...

Too bad...I hope you get it worked out....

What was the name of the vendor if you don't mind??? ONline store or national retailer only...

It was "La Centrale Informatique" which has about 5 locations in Quebec, click here for their website (click "english").

Just stuck the HD back in the bro's comp, and guess what? have a look at this. :Q :Q :Q

40ms?? Damn...

I didn't do anything, just stuck it back in his comp. And you saw the pics of his HD in my comp...

so wtf... now there's TWO things.

1) The HD is 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm, bastard store.
2) It's faster in my slower computer than in his? That makes no sense whatsoever. Everything is installed and configured properly! :|

Notice how the burst speed with the Maxtor in my comp is 80+ MB/s? It's down to 60 and under in this comp. Why? It's all configured the same. And his cables should be newer/faster than mine as well...

grrr...

oh well, guess I have to wait and see if they reply..

What are the motherboards of the 2 systems...

Did you place it as primary master in both the computers, or at least same ide position??? The 60mb/s make me think it isn't doing ata100 standards...

No kidding... but why? Both computers have the exact same motherboard, exact same cables, set up the exact same way (primary master, with cd drives on a seperate, secondary cable).

I just checked it again and it said 15.3ms, still 59.5MB/s read burst. The seek time is good for a 5400rpm I guess - but it's still way too slow! I don't want this 5400rpm garbage, that's not what we ordered! :|

And another thing... my Quantum gets 7% CPU utilization and the Maxtor gets 9-10% at the lowest. I ran sis_ide for both mobos to "force" ultra dma.. so basically both systems are set up almost perfectly identical, except my bro's has a faster cpu, new revision of mobo, faster video card (64MB GF2 as opposed to 32MB TNT2), etc.

Both have 300w atx medium cases.

I take it you have the ECS sis735 mobo??? I do to...

I keep hearing everbody mention running the sis_ide...What is this?? I didn't run it and both of my drives are running at ata100...I just set i up in the bios to read as pio mode 5 and they both score (40g WD 7200rpm, 45g Max 7200rpm) around 12.5-13ms average rates of 37000 - 34000, with burst speeds pegged on both...each also gets around 7-10 percent cpu utilization...

ouch, 13ms.. 🙁

everything sounds about right though. Just run sis_ide. It forces dma if it isn't actually being used. No harm can come by running this on your 735 board.. and yes both my comps have that board.

I installed 2k adv. serv. on mine and it seemed fine without the sis_ide but i ran it anyway just to make sure. And I get no higher than 12ms.. I average 25MB/s (my drive is old, gimme a break 😛) 7% CPU and 60MB/s burst.

The weird thing is how my bro gets 60MB/s burst on his comp and 80+MB/s on mine.. I don't get that at all.

I am always under 13ms with the newer WD 40gig harddrive..I have adv. size checked...mY burst and transfer speeds are right on the money...SO..What is the sis_ide driver going to do??? Where can I find it, cause I don't remember seeing anything about it at sis's website...

The older 45gig maxtor with 15gig platters in the slower one, it was a lot slower when I had it temporarily on the primary channel as a slave...NOw I have them on a pci ata100 controller card...Could be why my cpu utilization is a little higher then most normal ide uses...

Have you partitioned the drive at all???

Under 13 is respectable enough and shouldn't complain.. But if you had a sweet SCSI drive you'd be under 5 or so 😛

Anyway... www.tcdlabs.com to download HD Tach. Only works with 9x unless you crack it. Just do it (astalavista.box.sk is your friend... or I can email), wtf would anybody pay money just to test their hard drive once? Right.

Anyway... I don't have any PCI ATA controllers, I just use whatever is on the mobo. We both only have one HD in each comp so it's alright.

SIS_IDE will not likely do anything for you since you seem to be alright already, but if you still want to try it out which can't hurt really, I can send the file to you or you can look on your mobo cd (altho it may not be there - it's on my mobo cd but not my bro's, and we have the same mobo).

<< Are you both running the same OS??? Does hdtach have separate prog for different OS being used?? >>

We were both running the same OS when we first tested. I have since installed 2K Advanced Server... In 2K Pro I got 11ms, in 2K Advanced Server I got 12ms. yay, big deal.. I honestly see no diff. I do see a massive diff from my HD and his though, with the bigger gap.

Incidentally, when I was a Win9x user, I would get 9ms seek. Preeeetty damn schweet. Almost as-advertised (8.5).

Hmmm...

Are you both running a same revision board??? Same bios???

I am just picking things out of the air to try to explain it...Cause you guys should be for all intensive purposes mirror images of each other...

yeah please send me file to briand823@msn.com...Thanks

E-mail sent.

We are not running the same revision board. His came newer. Everything is identical except it has a newer release date I think, and has a slightly different bootup option, since it IS a newer thing : I bet I could flash mine to that one - but I'll save myself the risk since it works fine like this.

Go the file thanks...

I agree...only flash when things are not working...Too big of a chance of a possible problem that could hose things...

Plus the fact that I've killed 2 or 3 mobos with flashes in the past... hehe.

The way I have my partitions set up right now allows me to play around really easily. My *main* 2K setup is on an F: NTFS drive. My C: drive is an empty FAT32 piece 'o crap. I'm gonna play around with 98SE, BeOS and whatever else just for kicks.. laters.
