Wow. After reading some of these comments, I thought my machine would have some serious issues.
It did quite respectably.
At full screen, the 1080p T2 trailer played perfectly, and the 1080p Coral Reef had just a couple of very tiny video hiccups (audio was fine). And that's with Mozilla loaded and all my background processes running, too.

Hardware = Athlon XP 2600+ @ 192MHz FSB/12x ratio (2304MHz), Asus A7N8X mobo, WD 1200JB hard drive, 512MB DC-DDR RAM @ 2-2-2-5 100% sync, Radeon 8500 128MB, Apple 22" Cinema Display @ 1600 x 1024 resolution.

wow you are using a Apple Cinema display?

My Dimension 4550 2.6mhz/1 gig hyper X PC3000, R9700 TX ran the coral reef pretty well, a few minor hicups, especially if I moved the mouse around. The CPU usage was like 80% I think.

In contrast the new 4600 2.8C, 1 gig Hyper X PC3200, R9800 ran this like a dream. I couldn't make it skip if I wanted to and the CPU usage was averaging about 50-60%

With all videos viewed at 100% size in WMP; CoralReef_1080p dropped 223 frames, while the other ten videos dropped 0.

edit:
viewing CoralReef_1080p at 100% with BSPlayer dropped 130 frames.

Just for fun I just tried the Coral Reef 1080p on my machine at work (Dell Optiplex 2.0GHz P4 with 512MB PC-133 RAM - yes, not DDR)

Nice slide show. Got about 1 frame every 3 seconds. Amazing how much faster my home rig apparently is (see a few posts up).

OMG the Microsoft connection is fast. Brought my system to work just for the hell of it, downloaded at over 3MB/s (B as in Bytes).

No.

Dedicated HDTV processors do not use a general purpose processor (such as a Pentium). They use application-specific integrated circuits that are designed to do in hardware what our computers are doing in software.

The hardware is designed for a single purpose and can do nothing else. But what it is designed to do, it does very well, and very fast.

I don't understand the vast discrepancies that have been reported here...

I tried the 1080p Terminator 2 clip on my rig:

P4 2.8GHz / 533MHz FSB
1GB DDR
nVidia Quadro4 900 XGL 128MB DDR (AGP 4X)

It ran fine at 1280x1024 in a maximized window, but full screen was choppy. But at 1600x1200, everything was choppy.

What gives?!

yea, high bitrate mpeg 2 looks better. this is ultra compressed mpeg4
