Damn, that is some nice quality. I was able to run the 1080p Coral, but it stuttered just a bit in the beginning. 2Ghz XP @ 400mhz FSB on an Epox Nforce2..but with a older AIW Radeon 7500.

The quality is awesome though...especially on my LCD.

:)

Edit:

The race car is short but kinda cool.. I wonder if games will look like that anytime soon?

Ran the first video (Snowboard , 6.8mbps) through Winamp 2.93 using WMP9 codecs - impressive detail :)

And CPU Usage starts with a peak , but is in the range of 35-50% of my Athlon XP 2700+ (Overclocked 2100+ , 166FSB),

So I aint complaining :)

However, I dont see this format becoming mainsteam until broadband lines are at least 2mbit/s+

What associations, exactly, does it steal, aside from WMV which you need WMP9 to play anyway?
You can find the answer to your question a few posts BEFORE your reply. And forgive me for being picky, but if I tell a program not to associate itself with anything, I kind of expect it to act accordingly. While you might not think it's that big a deal, this association-theft is part (albeit a small one) of Microsoft's strategy to subtly steal market share from other companies by pushing their software in your face against your will. Yeah, I can reset the associations without a problem, but why should I even have to? I have my favourite media player, and I want to stick with it until I decide to switch. Your average Joe will probably just give in and keep using WM9, and say good-bye to other, usually better alternatives.

<EDIT>Sorry, did not mean to hijack thread... </EDIT>
<EDIT2>Oh, yeah, and Windows Media Player often messes up DivX files with the .avi extension, it gets all choppy, even on an XP 2400+. Winamp 3 plays all video files (save for wmv of course) just fine.</EDIT>

dunno, i've never had divx probs with mediaplayer. well, after a few reboots(i was installin stuff), mediaplayer has yet to hijack my mp3s:p

Yeah...the 720P coral one is smooth on my slower 2ghz Athlon, 200mhz FSB(CL2.5), AIW 7500 system, so he should be fine. I actually got the 1080p Coral one to almost run totally smoothly on my faster system upstairs. It only stutters for about 1/2 second in the very beginning whrn the plane takes off, and the rest runs smooth. That is also a XP on the a NF2, 2.2ghz, 400mhz FSB (CL2), 8500.

It will be a good test for my upcoming upgrade to a NF7-S/Barton/9700Pro combo..;)

Edit:

The larger 720P Liquid one is ok...about some surfing documentary coming out...not bad. Some of those waves are freakin huge!

Whats scary is those demos arent even true HDTV (IF they were they would be alot bigger in file size), Microsoft has written a codec to make teh files smaller so they will fit on a single 9 gb dvd. The new Extreme Deition of Terminator has the whole movie in this HDTV "format" but can only be played on your computer. DVD players with this codec are expected to be out late this summer.

Terminator 1080 played fine. Coral Reef @ 1080 has a few hiccups. Running 13.5x143MHz Athlon XP w/ interleaved memory (DDR) stuff.

I'm not sure what the weak link is, probably WMP9.

:D

Oh...and the T2 Extreme DVD includes a Hi-Def version (in WMP9) format of the movie!

In the meantime, be sure to get Al Franken's documentary about documentaries. It's hilarious! :)

Is that Coral Reef clip from the similarly-named IMAX film out now?
