Test drove a car, went through ez pass - they want $100

About a month ago I test drove a car and I guess I went through some ezpass tolls without thinking (since I have ezpass), now they just called me and want $101.

Do I have any obligation to pay it besides... karma? Think they'd come after me for 100 bucks?

I promise that a car dealer is much better at being a douchebag than you are. They also tend to hold grudges over tiny amounts of money.

They probably made a copy of your drivers license. Wonder what they could do with that info.

Don't get how they knew it was you?

Or was it you had your ezpass with you but you did not register with them the fact you were driving a different car?

Or did the dealer have a copy of your license and then turned you in?

Is it a toll or a fine?

shens. it had dealer plates. how do they know it was you?

Thats not hard - you go to dealer, ask to test drive. They take your license and record your name and times.

Days later they get letter from EZ Pass about a fine for one of their vehicles going through the lane without having EZ Pass. Dealer cross checks their test drive log with date and time of EZ Pass violation and voilà- your name comes up. Dealer forwards the bill to you.

I had the car over night, these are fines for going through an ezpass lane without ezpass - I always do that without even thinking about it.

Yes they took a copy of my DL.

if you are a current paying customer and its an honest mistake, they may be willing to work with you and just charge it to your existing account. cant hurt to ask.

Try getting a letter from the dealer showing that you had their car in that time period. See if EZ pass will let you slide by just deducting the toll from your account since it was you.

Dealer will likely cooperate as long as you take care of it in the end. Unless they're stupid and want to lose future business from a potential customer.

Did you sign paperwork before they let you test drive the car? If so there will be smallprint regarding any fines incurred by the vehicle while in your possesion, also is there any way you can call these ezpass people and explain the situation.

P.S You probably should have checked all of this before you started this thread.

Just to confirm the dealership wants you to pay it or is it the EZ pass people?

Second I agree with Puppies, they may not have recourse if it was their car and you did not agree to pay any tolls. Offer to pay the regular EZ pass rate and explain it was a mistake.

Technology is not forgiving for honest mistakes which this sounds like. I am sure you were not the first and will not be the last.

I don't understand toll roads because I live in a state that doesn't have them, but if you already have EZ Pass, why would you be charged a fee for using that lane? Is it just a card that you have on your person or is it a decal on your car?

its a device in his own car, but he didn't have it with him in the 'test drive/dealer ' car, but he's used to just going through the ezpass lane (where the device is read by radio waves to let you go through without a ticket) so he forgot his ezpass device wasn't in the dealer car and so he got the ticket/fine for being a scofflaw, on accident, because he forgot he needed to go through the normal lane and pay with cash/credit or debit card etc etc

he was test driving. He did not have the ezpass with him. He forgot he wasn't in his own car. I would guess this happens quite a bit.

op I suggest getting the ticket from dealer, call ezpass and explain, see if they can wave the fine. I am sure you are still going to pay more than regular ezpass since they had to photoid the car.

what happen if you just ignore the dealership? i guess they can small claim court you, but do they have your address or any other information? they can always send you to a collection....

you need to determine what they can do and how much information they have on you if you decide to ignore them.

it's a transponder that's triggered when you drive through a toll booth.

are you suggesting he stiff the dealership because of his own neglect?
