Actually the Focus is one of the beat small cars out there. Real European handling.

Thanks OP!!! I have a friend that buys salvage vehicles, and the Focus is one of his favorites. His 21 year old has had one for 3 years, which has proved to be very reliable, tough, cheap to keep, etc.:);)

Nice post and probably a fun test drive.

As far as I'm concerned, I've yet to see another small car take on the rally scene with more fervor than the Focus (at least in Europe), although the Beetle is really close.

Don't talk smack about a car until you've pushed at least 130+ in it, or at least that's what I do :)

Anyone receive the email yet? I submitted earlier today after reading the thread in another *cough*fatwallet*cough* forum. So far I haven't heard anything. On that note, I'm still waiting for the $50 voucher choice form for the Chevy test drive. Oh well, no big loss if it falls through.

Jimbon - I'm assuming that you're joking but just in case, Sam Goody sells music CDs, movies in VHS and DVD, video games, computer software, and books. I'm trying to debate on what to buy I think the new R Kelly CD, maybe a DVD movie and possible a $19.99 computer game. I wonder if the $50 is to Sam Goody B&M or SamGoody.com?

colossus - I've actually heard a lot of good things about the Ford Focus and may even really consider test driving it. Although if I were to buy a car in this class I would first seriously consider the Honda Civic and Mazda Protege.

If any of you thinking of getting one, go for the coupe-Focus ZX3. You won't regrat, trust me. Oh and this isn't one of the FORD "typical junk". Almost forgot, get it with stick not automatic.

Sorry to take it more off topic, but yes people who call Ford this .... or Honda that.... don't really know anything other than what they've been mentally washed with. Can't just a car until you drive it.

The Focus rocks cuz it's from Europe. True, if you want a smooth ride and the best ergonomics, go for a Civic (Corolla pricing is out of control). Personally, I own a Ford Contour SVT and have no regrets. 2.8 years into owning it and not a single problem. My biggest repair has been $12 for a tire patch.

If you're into driving your car around the twisties then this car rocks. Of course you want the stick. You will get recalls up the wazoo (my Contour has had 9 over the last 3 years), but I have never had any problems with my car. The airbag light did start flashing once, but that's cuz the idiot dealership snagged the airbag sensors when doing a recall. If it weren't for the recalls, my car would never visit the Ford dealer again.

I only wish Ford made a nice mid size car that they could import from Europe, but Europe doesn't believe in mid-size. Hopefully the Volvo merger will sprout a new Taurus in the next generation, or perhaps when they get BMW they will finally make a nice 4 door "box car".

For an american car this thing is short on HP. top focus has only 130HP at 5300rpm. The civic si has 160 and the integra and celica have a baseline of 140. The interga and civic run about a grand more than the focus. The new integra is will have a base hp of 160. I also beleive that the integra has better handling than the focus:p

Mods, please PM me if posting this stuff is wrong, but I just wanted to comment back because I love racing and this topic gets my blood going.

I love the Integra in terms of handling, and it's a pretty good value. My only qualm with it is that literally more than ½ my senior high school class ('93) had one, so I got real sick of looking at them. The ricecars in Cerritos seem to have switched to Eclipses and Civics...don't ask me why.

The Civic Si is a waste of money. The only thing I can rave about it is that it sounds sweet at high rev and the Electric blue is awesome. My Contour SVT cost about $2K less than my classmates Si and can run circles around his car (on track and off).

You need to factor in the Ford rebates into the pricing. From what I saw at Cerritos Auto Square the Foci are running about $2 to $3k less than equally equiped Civics. The Civics are more user friendly than the Focus. My Contour's cupholders amount to holes in the floor...pretty pathetic. But racing they are not. Ever try taking one to 130 miles per hour? Same goes for the new Celica...unstable. The Integra can hold its ground...(ah brings back memories of doing the 105 at 3 AM at 140+ hehe)

The ZX3 is still a better "Driving" car. Their last 2 compact cars (Contour and Focus) have been low on juice but a blast in the pants to drive. Drive a 328i and you'll know what I mean. Lexus can quote all the silly numbers it wants about the IS300, but when you're running Auto-X or track at triple digits you'll want the 328i, maybe the 330. In the same respect, the Focus was made to be driven to the edge of the "flight envelope". The Focus SVT should be out soon. Hopefully Ford of Europe will lend some help and get the power close to 200HP and 185 Torque.

I want a Focus SVT!!!
http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/previews/2001/March/200103_preview_Ford_SVTFocus.xml

I wonder if they will have this baby for test driving when I get there, it's goning to be at least three months before I go back to get my Mustang oil changed (excuse to test drive the car).

Oh, I test drove the regular focus and it is very sweet. Response time is great for an automatic (used to the quick start with stick), no 15 sec. start like a Corolla. Handles wonderfully too, took the test drive on a hilly and curvy area and took to the curves real nice. I have driven a 2001 Volvo S40 on occasion (when I beg alot to my grandpa) and the response time on the Focus reminded me of the one on the Volvo. Okay not as fast but pretty quick for that type of car, which means it's not noticeable like in many automatics. Only wish it had more power, turbocharged engine? (bring on the Cogsworth), AWD, and five door hatchback (only avaliable in Europe :() to fit all my friends and all the junk I carry around. Come on you doubters, there's a reason while it was Automobiles car of the year (over alot of expensive competition) and it still well loved by people all over.

I personaly don't like Honda cars, don't know why, may be too many of them and got sick of looking at. hehe

I like rare wheel drive cars better, more handling fun.

Remember folks Honda killed the CIVI SI, and took the good suspension pieces off etc....Focus is a much more driver oriented car now.
