Is it possible or necessary to test a new SSD before putting into service?
Just purchased wo new SSD's and I'd like to test before putting into service to test so I know the drive is good before I build and if I if I don't use the drive immediatly?
Just plug into an external usb enclosure or adapter and connect? Samsung 830's 128 & 256.... Sorry, new to SSd's!

If you are testing before the build that surely means you got another computer to use. So yes, just plug it in the SATA port of that computer, download the Samsung's Magician and do the basic SMART or quick test. No need to do a long, surface scan.
