Advanced Micro Helping Tesla on Car Chip, Says CNBC

"
Tesla is building its own A.I. processor using technology from AMD, reports CNBC, citing remarks by AMD's partner in manufacturing, GlobalFoundries. That may be competition for chips already being supplied to Tesla by Nvidia."

"
Interestingly, Tesla’s chip efforts are run by Jim Keller, the chip legend who was the chief chip architect at AMD for several years and did the main design work for the “Zen” processor family that powers the revived computer chip efforts of AMD, and then left AMD in 2016 for a position with Tesla."

Either way, my stock was cooking today and after hours.

One of the bests for me as well buddy. The stock is so volatile though.

I'm in for several thousand shares since May 2016. Average share price is around $8

I have made a lot of money on AMD, but recently I was down 50% and 70% on my $13 and $14 January calls. I think I would've been OK even without this news after earnings, but now I can see some decent profits. Very pleased.

I also own a tesla... and I'm glad they won't have to rely on some strange conglomeration of isreali company's camera system and Nvidia infotainment. I think I might downgrade to a Model 3 if it turns out AMD is in the 3.

I have to admit that nvidia's current infotainment system in the Model S is is quite capable for something designed in 2013 and built in 2015. But it is old now and I really want something faster and more capable

Am I wrong to expect this to be a semi-custom solution? (Edit: I see that's guessed in the article as well.)

If I were a big player in some market needing a SoC designed to mix common tech with some own proprietary components competitors shouldn't have access to AMD seems very well positioned to deliver.

I wonder what this chip is going to look like? My guess is a handful of ARM cores to control the system, with a shedload of Vega CUs. Vega has support for 4X rate 8-bit operations, which should give it good performance for inference tasks:
