You have to keep in mind that sometimes Elon throws out ideas but they are always subject to change. Elon has no problem changing direction, very quickly when needed. He always has a bad habit of thinking out loud during some of the events that he does and speaking off the cuff. If you think about the giga-factory, it went fairly quickly from a 50Gwh per year factory production to a 150Gwh factory.
As far as Solar Panels on the roof of a car. I am sure after somebody ran the numbers for Elon, he figured out it was a bad idea and not worth it.
Their is a interesting possibility of usage of the Tesla battery packs beyond their car. Say you own a 2015 P85 Model S. After say 10-years of usage the battery pack has only about 70% of it's rated capacity left. This still gives about 60 kwh of capacity. Tesla now makes a 120kwh battery for the Model S. So you pay to have your battery replaced with a 120kwh pack and you then have the option of keeping your old pack and having it installed in your house. A 60kwh capacity battery pack could easily run a entire house. With the proper panels on your roof you could easily be completely off the grid.
