Playground Discovery Prompts County-Wide Inspections
<< LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. -- Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona ordered inspections of all parks in his jurisdiction that have playground equipment Thursday.
This order followed the discovery of 30 razor blades and 28 nails in a Laguna Niguel park Thursday morning.
A parent who took his 18-month-old daughter to the park found the sharp objects around a playground slide and swings, authorities said.
The father, who routinely takes his daughter to the local park early in the morning, made the discovery about 6:30 a.m.
After finding the first blades at the bottom of a slide, the father began checking and found nails by the swings.
Park personnel later used a metal detector and found more blades and nails, which had been left strategically to cause injuries. No one was hurt, however.
Authorities fear the suspects are hiding the blades in the evenings or early morning hours. Anyone caught could be subject to charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
Last Sunday, razor blades were found partially buried in the sand at a playground at Main Beach in Laguna Beach.
Several hours before the blades were found in Laguna Beach, a female caller warned a police dispatcher that some of her friends had told her they were heading to the beach to do something to "hurt people," police said. >>
This has been on the local news in LA (starting last week) and I am surprised it has not reached the national news. Since there are "copycats" I like to suggest to the parents here that their kids wear shoes at the local park.
