President Bush to raise national terror threat level today from "yellow" to "orange" -- second highest alert, officials tell CNN. Details to come.

Bush to raise terrorism threat level

U.S. Officials Warn of Higher Terror Attack Level

The last increase in the level, to orange from yellow, was on Sept. 10, 2002, right before the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Yellow, the middle of a five color range, means a "significant" risk and orange means a "high" risk of terrorist attack. Red represents a "severe" risk.

The media does a wonderful job of getting everyone all worked up.

what was that statistic in Bowling for Columbine? Crime has dropped, but media reports of violent crime has gone UP 600%? They NEVER show the good things of a city, its always about who got shot where (i live in Houston and thats how it is here at least).

Heh, before I actually clicked on the cnn.com link, I thought that maybe, like right below the weather info, was a little "Terror threat" bar, somewhere in the corner which changes. :)

The terror alert color system is about the dumbest thing I've seen in quite some time. Holly cow is it stupid.

Now this is supposition not suggestion causation.

If we were going to war, would we raise the level before the fact as a precaution?

I wonder if they are afraid of the terrorists taking advantage of the snowstorm.

I appreciate the warning but what the hell are we the public suppose to do? Cower under our beds? I guess this is good for the government in case something bad happens so they can say "Hey we warned you!"

Now I was being sarcastic and I understand that this warning is meant more for Law Enforcement and Security Personel througout the country.

I am going to make a pot of coffee then go check the cattle and fix a gate. All the while being happy I live in the middle of nowhere and am better supplied than the local National Guard unit.

Maybe daisy chain a few claymore's around the corn crib if I have time.

Edited very poor spelling

Wow, gee, raise the terror alert. I wonder if it has anything to do with drumming up more support for the war. :disgust:

Probably not. Seems to be plenty of support here already.

While I am not a great supporter of many of Bush's policies, I have to say I can see why this is being done. Consider the outrage if there were a credible threat (which does not imply certainty of attack), the administration said nothing, and it came to pass? The witch hunt on the part of Congress for who to blame for 9/11 would be a picnic.
"Bush knowingly hides information which could have saved American lives" <----the Boston Globe headline the day after the next attack.

I don't often post to Off Topic...

I must say that most of the replies that I'm seeing here disturb me. The U.S. military has been using a threat system like this for years, and it works. Unless you have lived under something like that for years, I guess I don't expect you to understand it.

There IS something that every one of you can do. The whole reason for the implementation of such a system was so that people would become more aware of what is around them. A major reason that we are in the situation that we are today is that the american people had become complacent. The majority of americans walk down the street everyday oblivious to what is going on around them.

By raising the "threat," our government is saying "wake up people." Pay attention to what is going on around you. You never know when you could be the one that spots something that is out of the ordinary, or out of place.

Everybody complained that we did nothing last time we had "intelligence" of a terrorist plot against americans. There was an uproar that the public was not warned. Now, they do something and you still complain.

I'm a military spouse. My wife and I are currently stationed overseas. We don't have the luxuries afforded to us that you do. We very much appreciate any warning given to us by our government to be on the lookout. "Force Protection" is a very big deal here... Maybe you can say... "it won't happen to me, not here."

I wish I had that luxury.

Unfortunately that leads to overwhelming paranoia and hurts the system more than helping it.

Being aware does NOT equate to paranoia.
