Terrified of Rollercoasters

But everyone wants to go, and I really want to like them. I want to get the sense of enjoyment everyone seems to get. It seems like everyone I know wants to ride everything 5 times, and I won't step back on it after one time.
I have a lot of anxiety and fear problems though.
My SO said I should just take some anxiety meds before I try to get on anything if we go.
I have never taken anything really and I don't really know what would help. I could take a few shots of something, but I am fairly certain I would become sick on the coaster.

Any ideas?

grow a pair?

🙂

Are you afraid it's going to go off the tracks or just fear of motion sickness from the ride?

if it makes you that uncomfortable, then don't go on it.

don't let peer-pressure guide your actions.

I can't stand rollercoasters; they scare the heck out of me for a variety of reasons.

Its fear of everything. Going up, down, speed, off the tracks, buckles breaking. Being too high. Falling too fast.
I regret it the moment I get on.

don't you ride enough as it is? 🙂

in all seriousness though i don't get this fear. my wife used to love going to six flags. then not too many years ago i guess she'd read too many stories about kids getting thier feet chopped off, and stuff like that.

Here's a suggestion, dont be a pussy. The park cant afford to let you die, lawsuits costs them too much ;p

Try taking a step back: What's the worst that could happen?

there's a difference of what CAN happen and what you THINK CAN happen, and if you take a rational look at it you see you'll be fine. so sit in, grip the bar, be terrified while you hear the clacking towards the first drop and have a fun ride

I was the same way, until I finally decided this past year to get over it. So I went to our company picnic, which is held at the local amusement park, and went on both of the major rollercoasters, twice.

I discovered it was more the thought of riding the coaster that freaked me out, but actually being on one is pretty damn fun. Anyway, just getting on the coaster is the hard part, I did it and I'm not scared anymore.

Yet people do die at these parks every few years because of a fault in the ride...😕

Your post is like saying the Airlines can't afford to have a plane crash and injure or kill hundreds of passengers.

My guess is that more people die driving to the park than actually at the park.

You should be afraid of even going!!!

Dude I was TERRIBLY scared of coasters until my early 20's because my pops thought it would be a good idea to bring me on a rollercoaster when I was 3 or so. I don't really remember how old I was, but I must have been very young.

Anyway, my girlfriend at the time got me to get on Medusa at Six Flags, which is certainly no slouch. I was terrified to no end. The only way I could actually get on was to literally force myself into the seat and close the bars before I got a chance to rethink it. I absolutely love coasters now, they're really one of the most exhilarating experiences this side of BASE/bungee/skydiving.

They're not nearly as scary as they seem, just yell as loud as you can during the drops and you won't even get that nauseous feeling in your stomach. Trust me, they're a blast.

If you don't like them don't do it. If you want to learn to enjoy them more then there isn't much you can do except keep riding them and hope that it becomes an acquired taste and the fear vanishes. Otherwise, you are pretty much out of luck.

the parks that such things happen at, suck horribly. Should be a sign not to go there.
Cedar Point has an excellent safety record, and is actually a little too stringent on rider policy to keep it that way. Only fault recently was Top Thrill Dragster, but that's kind of an exception.

I have no fear involved in roller coasters and enjoy them. Well, only fear that gets me is a fear of falling, which can be considered rational. It's a general fear of falling, where if I feel unsecured, then falling from any height creeps into my mind and I get extremely nervous. However, while secured in the seats, it eases up a bit, but the anticipation gets my nerves going unconsciously. That's why I love lift hills. Only rush I get from Top Thrill Dragster is the pure speed. The straight track up and back down provides very little thrill to me, except for the idea that I want to enjoy it and that it's a 90 degree up and down track and the spiral on the down section. The speed is what does it, especially the rate of acceleration.

The adrenaline though, is why I love rollercoasters. I get so much pumping, it's awesome. It made me an adrenaline junkie now, always trying to find ways to getting adrenaline rushing and enjoying it. Standing or sitting on the edge of a building, is the kind of adrenaline I don't enjoy, and does no good for me.

The fun part about roller coasters is that you could die at any minute if something goes wrong. Just remember that and you should be fine.

bingo. sometimes the cars fly off the rail (usually on the decline of the tallest hill, or at the top of the loop-de-loop, but it doesn't happen very often. and when it fdoes happen, people don't usually die, they just get maimed. Just concentrate on the clicking of the cars as they go up the first big hill and you'll be fine
