Anyone have a guess as to what is wrong with my parents tree? It obviously has to come down but if there are creatures in it we don't want them migrating into the house.

Anything that looks like sawdust around? Termites eat the wood, ants don't, so the ants leave lots of sawdust.

There's a little sawdust at the bottom of the tree.

There doesn't appear to be any active insects that we can see in the tree doing this.

Is the tree even remotely healthy looking above what we see in the picture? Like... full of leaves and such?

how long has there been sawdust. some beetles larva spend entire seasons inside trees they infest eating channels into em before they leave as beetles. they leave round exit holes or something. one possibility... if the tree is unhealthy its more likely to be infested ...normally they can drown bugs with sap.

Some of the upper portions of the tree appear dead but most of it looks alive and normal.

I don't see any evidence of tunneling, which is typical of termites. Probably carpenter ants, although I can't say I've ever heard of them doing that to a living tree....
