Termite Inspection

So, the house two doors down from me had termites...blah. My neighbor had an inspection just to be safe and turned out she had them as well.

I'm assuming this means that I should get an inspection as well. The house is just 5 years old and just dropped out of termite warranty.

Do I really need to get this inspected now? How much should I budget for something like this cost wise?

No, you don't need to get an inspection unless you're selling your home. Termites, if you have them, require many years of unlimited access to your home to really do any significant damage. If you do call a termite inspector to come by for a look, I assure you he will find termites. He doesn't make money by telling you all is well and to have a good day. And when you do have to treat 'em, hold on to your wallet. Depending upon the company, the size of the house, etc., you could be looking at a $3,000 bill.

HOLY CRAP! I was thinking a few hundred. Don't some places have contracts where they inspect like 1 time per month and treat them for like $500 per year or something?

I pay $100/year, and have since buying the house, for a termite bond. Every year some guy comes out and looks around, and if damage is ever caused to the house because of termites they will pay all damages. They sprayed stuff originally, and I don't know if they've done it since (I don't care, because $100/year covers me).

You can surely get a new termite bond, as long as they can confirm that there are no termites there right now.

Given that both of your neighbours have termites, yes get your house checked out.
