I am a little bit peeved, although I recognize that is all really of my own creation.
I have a decent socket 754 Newcastle processor running OCed at 2.3 Ghz. I have invested in 2 GB of DDR RAM for my system. I have a decent x850 pr AGP video card. I fully recognize that I have reached the terminal upgrade state.
Anything I choose to do, involves over $600 investment. That annoys me because I have always managed to make my upgrades incremental at under $300 or $400. this has kept me from ever having to sink major cash into my system.
If I go with a core duo thing (that causes me pain since I have been an AMD person since the 450Mhz K6III parts) I need to replace the RAM, processor, mboard and video card. $250 for RAM, $200 for processor, $100 for board, and $150 for vid card--total $700 or more. The same goes for an AMD system.
I could go to socket 939 and grab one of the last boards that support DDR. If I couple that with an Athlon X2 4600 Toledo, I might be able to get away with less: processor $220, RAM $0, mboard $100, video card $150--total $470. The problem with this system is that it leaves me in the same boat in a few years.
My application is PS CS2/3 with very large images (400MB or larger). I play some games, but that is not my primary purpose.
suggestions about my terminal upgrade state...
