Ok I'm playing around with terminal services in application mode on my home setup. I know there is a way to have clients logon to a ts machine and be able to only access the programs I specify but I don't know where or how. I've installed MS office in add/remove ts application mode already so I figured I'd start there. Any links or help would be great.

Thanks

Vuja de!

Do you want to serve these clients a desktop shell, and then restrict applications?
Or do you want them to go straight into the application?

lol!

Well I would like to try both but right now I would just like them to go right to the app or apps (if it's possible for them to be able to choose only what I give them).

ivwshane, I've never really tried TS in application mode because of the licensing issue :)

Anyway, you can do this through group policy if you have active directory setup. You can specify what are the ONLY executables / programs that can be run by each client. I would then recommend creating a standard desktop profiles with only their restricted program icons/shortcut.

I've setup ts so that the user can only launch IE. That is easy. You can specify it in AD Users and Computer. Go to user property and environment tab.

Have fun

Ok that worked but that would only work with one program. How would I do it so they could choose, say from different office apps like word, excel etc? My teacher said you can do it and I think she said it was done through an Explorer like page. I would ask her but I don't go to the school anymore.

ivwshane,

If you want to let them access more than one apps, you need to specify it explicitly in GPO. I believe it is "Run only speficied program" or something like that ...

You HAVE to create a desktop profile, possibly restricted to No taskbar and only several of the allowed software on the desktop, or however you like it.

If you'd like them to access it through Explorer, I believe you have to create a webpage with ADSI scripting to allow that.. that is out of my league :)

Have fun

You are going to have to do a little searching on the MS site.In paticular some files from the Office Resource kit are neccesary to impliment what you want. The GPO`s mentioned obviously havent been tried since terminal server program installation of MS office is done through a specific process.I couldnt find the link....i tried..just wanted to point you in right direction before your off attempting to leverage ADSI against IIS (which is what you would be doing..not against the TS..but another topic all together)

If you want something inexpensive but very good try Java TS its a very good and easily configurable solution. One which Ive implemented..if you have any questions...

Yeah office has to be installed through add remove programs on the TS, which I did. I'm guessing that's what you ment by "specific process". I'll just have to look a little deeper when creating the GPO. Thanks for the other link!
