Tenn. Tries Shame to Stem Drunken Driving.

IGBT

Text

Starting Jan. 1, convicted drunken drivers are required to do 24 hours of roadside cleanup while wearing orange vests emblazoned with the phrase "I am a Drunk Driver."

The new law is aimed at first-time offenders, says one of its sponsors, state Rep. Charles Curtiss.

"You cause them to go out and pick up trash in front of their friends and neighbors, the embarrassment is going to be such that they're never going to want to go through that again," Curtiss said. "Hopefully you can turn them around to never become a second-time offender."

I think it's a great idea. Would be nice to see other states/local governments adopt something similar.

I once worked with a guy who was in a work furlow type situation on a grave yard shift. This guy was a multiple dui offender. One of the nicest guys I've ever met and didn't even know he was in jail until I worked with him for about two weeks. I asked him about doing community service and if he ever had to pickup trash on the side of the road. He said "yeah sure no big deal". For MANY MANY people humility does not work because they just dont' give a FVck what other people think. This guy would openly talk about how for most of his twenties he didn't have his license and yet would still drive. On his last arrest for a dui he said he actually led the cops on a pursuit for about 8 miles before he realized they were trying to pull him over.

I in no way condone drinking and driving but talking with this guy and hearing some of his stories about him and people he had met in jail for dui's I don't think this would have any effect on whether some decides to drive drunk.

i think it is a great idea... and for that woman in washington state who says it could have the opposite effect...

she is so worried that the shame is gonna make them feel worse and they will drink more cause they feel bad about themselves....part of the downhill spiral of this great country is because we worry to much about ppl feeling bad about themselves.

on the second offense, we should tattoo it across their friggen forheads.

This is pointless and will stop nothing. The drunk guy isn't gonna say "I better not drive drunk or else i have to wear a vest on the side of the road and pickup garbage"

Pretty much every state already requires DUI people to do community service picking up trash and when you do that you have to wear safety gear of some type by law. When is the last time you drove by some guys working on the side of the road and read what was on their clothing?

Soon there'll be Tshirts that say the exact same thing, worn by college kids to look "cool."

Dammit, I should probably market that now before someone else does.
