tempurpedic mattress

I'm going to be getting a new mattress. I've tried the tempupedic mattress at brookstone and it felt pretty good. Though you really cant tell from laying on it for 5 minutes. The one big negative is its pretty expensive.

Anyone have any experience with tempurpedic?

What are the negatives, and positives with it?

I hated it. It felt comfortable in the store to me as well, and having back problems... I figured why not? It comes with a 120-day trial. Once I got it home though, it took me about 3 nights to realize I hated it. Why? For one thing, the material really does what they say it does... it conforms to your body. This means two things:

1) You will sink into a cavity. Good luck trying to roll around. But supposedly thats the point. You're so relaxed and comfortable you don't need to turn. I hated it.

2) You are "surrounded" by mattress, so it can get warmer than a normal bed.

Other than that, pretty much everything you can read on the net is true. Its heavier than a normal mattress, has a distinct odor the first few days you have it, is firmer when cool, and softer as it warms up (room temperature AND your body). As far as the trial period, YMMV. I bought mine from a high(er) end furniture store with a 120 day trial. What they fail to mention on the commercials is that if you don't want it, they'll take it back.... but you pay to ship it back. For me that came to $150. I also got two tempurpedic pillows with it for "free", but since I returned the mattress, I ended up paying $80 for the both of them because they can't take back used pillows. All in all I'd say the reason I didn't like it is that I'm a stomach sleeper, and the bed is more befitting someone that sleeps on their back, or their side.

the tempupedic mattress rips pretty easily. A big no-no if your rough-for-funzies or if you have kids. Either will ruin it quickly. Space foam is still foam...

Imagine the possibilities.....

Hit Sam's Club and buy the memory foam "toppers" for around $100+ depending on the mattress size. Try it for a week or two to see what you think. You may find you hate it and just saved yourself a big chunk of money.

It isn't exactly the same as buing the whole mattress, but you get a pretty good idea of what it will feel like and if it will be too warm for you.

Aside from the heat factor, it isn't even close. There's a reason toppers are ~$100 and the mattress is $1000+. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themself. Alot of the experience of the mattress lies in how its supported underneath, and simply laying a 3 inch piece of foam on your existing mattress does not equate. By the way, another thing about the actual mattress: sleazy salesman will try to say you need the "foundation" to properly support a tempurpedic mattress. In reality all you need is a flat piece of plywood over your existing box spring to evenly support it.

There was that big foam memory pillow thread in Hot Deals that had a lot of good info on this. Where to get it cheap, what types there are, etc.

Personally some of the really nice pillowtop mattresses are more comfortable for me.

http://mattresses.net/ <- i think that was the cheap place to get them
