Hey,
I just got my new AMD Dual Core 4200+ :D and I was just curious what a decent tempurature should be on it? It's currently running at about 42 degrees (celcius) when it's idle. Is this normal? It's just alot hotter than my old processor was.

Thanks!

That doesn't look too high. My 4200+ started just a little cooler than that after I installed it. After a few days of running with it, though, my temps started to come down. Now I'm at about 29 degrees at idle. Of course, I am in the basement of a Michigan home, so ambient temp here doesn't hurt;) Just give the TIM a few days to settle into the cracks.

A lot of things affect that temp- the ambient temp, the case airflow, the HSF. You did not say if you had replaced the case, motherboard, using stock heatsink, etc. I looked at your specs but cannot tell about your cooling setup.
42 C is OK, what you should also test is temps under a load, that is what will be real important. When everything starts warming up, and you are approaching 70C, time to reassess and make some changes in your cooling.
1. Do you have an exhaust fan besides the PSU fans?
2. How is the airflow? Ribbon cables hanging in the path of the airlfow?
3. Integrated graphics such as you have will heat up a MB, which will in turn heat up a CPU.
4. Good luck and enjoy your new CPU. Any plans for a new MB and video card?

I have a 4800+ running aroun 30C at idle 42 at load. I'm wondering if my temp readings are accurate though.

thanks everyone. hardcandy: i have one rear and one front case fan (120mm and 80mm respectively). there are one or two cables that could be hanging in the path of airflow, maybe i'll have to play around with those a little bit. and yes, i plan on buying a nice pci-e video card soon, however i think it will be a while before i upgrade this motherboard- the whole computer in my setup that you can see from my sig is brand new.
