temps getting hotter - shutdown imminent

Well, just before I left my apt this morning, my 24/7 SoB/MagicJack computer was beeping, once in a while. I figured it must be due to temps, so I started CoreTemp. Cpu is E2140 @ 2.8Ghz, 1.425v BIOS, cooled by a HyperTX2. Well, temps were 79C, with a tJmax of 85C, so I was 6C away from tJmax. Not good. I remember the hot days of summer, and my rig got to 9C away from Tjmax previously, but I don't remember it triggering the BIOS temp alarm, which goes off at 80C. So the rig has gotten warmer, probably needs a dusting or re-application of TIM or something. Possibly, I could replace the HyperTX2 with an OCZ Vendetta, I have a few of them around.

A friend's rig has an E5200 @ 3.625Ghz, 1.425v BIOS, and his HyperTX2 keeps it cool enough so it doesn't trigger the BIOS temp alarm. He doesn't run SoB for me anymore, he just games on it.

So anyways, I shut down SoB, and temps dropped to 54C idle, which still seems a bit warm to me, even though I have C1E and EIST disabled. Ambient temps were 78F.

So...I take it you want to know why your temps are so high?

Reseat the heatsink, and get some good quality thermal paste. Also, what case are you using?

I know why the temps are so high, I'm running a high voltage through a 65nm chip that's very leaky. Along with a mediocre heatsink.

I just need to take it apart and clean it, and upgrade to an E5200, they run a lot cooler.

Wow, those are crazy temps. Speedfan reports my i5/750 @3.6ghz at 48-50c under full load right now with the primegrid challenge.

Hi Virtual Larry
Yea those are high temps!😱

I have a E5200 @3.45GHz, vcore somewhere between 1.3-1.35v (can't remember offhand), running DPAD I get about 50C CPU temps with virtually the same ambient temps as you.

My Q6600 @3.34GHz, vcore 1.34v, running F@H with the same ambient as you (26C) is peaking at 63C, (which is rather warm for it). Although both my rigs have big coolers 🙂.

Btw it's very risky running a 45nm CPU over 1.4v, very short CPU life is not unheard of above that level!, I especially wouldn't risk it for any rigs running a lot of DC.
