i was just wondering what the real acceptable temps are. I'm running an AMD XP 1800+ with a gigabyte ga7dx board, using the MBM5 to check temps (since it has a thermal sensor underneath, i thought itd be ok.) The HSF is globalwin cak38. I'm running with the case closed, the case being the Antex sx1030... with all 4 case fans running.

my temps idle around 42 - 44, and the temps max anywhere from 48-53. Nothing is going wrong, system is running fine... the max temps were taken after a coupla hours of running rc5 while just doing regular stuff (i.e. no games or gfx/vid stuff). I've ran rc5 for a few days... and the temps dont go over what i stated earlier.

so this is ok right?

i've had bad experiences with t-birds... so i'm just wondering. i know the XP is sposda run cooler tho.

oh btw i'm not OCing. obviously

Well, the one thing to remember is to only compare with people that use hte same mb... cross-mb comparisons are impossible due to socket-thermistor problems.

That being said, if you're stable, you should be okay.

i have the same board, same processor
mine idles at 45 (normal usage)
if i crank it up and give it a load, it goes up to about 50 (highest i've seen it as is 52)
i'm using the heatsink that came with the extreme performance package from AMD - but i replaced its fan with something bigger

Your 1800+ is running faster than any T-bird ever did at stock speeds, so even if the temps seem similar (1.533 GHz vs. 1.4 GHz T-bird) it is still technically running cooler. I would say if you aren't getting much over 50°C and you aren't having mysterious lock ups then don't worry about it. Watch out when summer rolls around and the room temp goes up, though, in case things start to get out of hand.
