Temperatures ... Am I seeing things?

I just put together a new system with a AMD1800 CPU. With it a Thermalright SK-6 and a random 60mm pentium ii fan to bolt onto the SK6. When I turned on the computer and started installing stuff, the CPU temperature read 40C. I have only 1 L1A case fan pushing air into the case.

On my other AMD1800 computer outfitted with a SK6 and L1A fan, the CPU temp reads an average of 68C. This computer has like 3 fans going on too, compared to the one.

Is there something wrong with the temperature reader? I somehow dont' believe these numbers can be so conflicting. All are AS-III thermal compounded.

Thanks,

Peter

That second one sounds way too high. I wouldn't tolerate anything much over 50degC on a regular basis with an Athlon. My Duron 1200 (OC to 1320) stays at 20degC with the big Speeze 5F263... ($8. from newegg - OOS for now) (back in stock and now only $7.) and AS3. You should check for any slight flaws in the HS/F assembly and die/HS interface on that second unit. Perhaps you got some lumpy AS3...
