I have the stock fan and at no OC it seems to be running hot - ~47C. I have an AMD 3500+ with Abit AV8 3rd eye. Why is it so hot? How hot can it get? When is it too hot? Thanks.

there are many people who have hit 2.5-2.7ghz with the stock fan. reasons as to why your system maybe be warm is because of bad air flow, warm ambient temp, and weak thermal paste. i recommend you in getting arctic silver 5 as a thermal paste. also, try to move the cables around so that they dont interfere with air flow. can you also be more specific about your system?

id rather use ceramique since AS5 is rumored to conduct and im sorta clumsy with thes things. your cpu should be fine up to what? 60c?

What case ya got? 47c is a little on the high side if that is your idle temp. Using a good quality paste (shin etsu,AS5,ceramique)?

The airflow seems to not be obstructed too bad. I will try to get new thermal paste, I think I will actually get a new fan also? Any reccomendations of a fan that can flow ALOT of air and will not be too loud? I am running at only 2.2Ghz (no OC at all) and it is 52.0C right now, with an ambient temperature of 27.0C.

My system specs are as follows:

Abit Av8 3rd Eye Mobo
AMD A64 3500+ Processor
2GB Kingston HyperX PC3200 DDR RAM
PNY Geforce 6800GT 256MB Video Card
Western Digital SATA 250GB HDD

This is all in a cheap case with a cheap 600W power supply. There are two intake fans on the front, two exhaust in the rear, and one intake in the side panel.

Any reccomendations for the best fan that is not too loud?

Also, what temperature starts to get dangerous?

Edit: As two side notes, I di not notice the CPU Temp being high until I tried 2.5Ghz OC. It was stable for about 30 minutes then windows restarted. I noticed during this time that my temperature was nearing 50C. I never did take any notice to what the temp was before I OC, so I dont suspect that this damaged it in any way. I have not experienced any further problems other than that one restart.

Second side note, I just took the side panel off and felt the air coming out of the processor fan, which is merely warm, and I also felt the heat sink, which was barely warm. Is it possible that the CPU temperature that my BIOS, 3rd Eye, and guru software is reading is incorrect? It surely doesn't feel like it is as hot as it is saying. 51C is roughly 123F, which is pretty hot. Doesn't feel this hot. It is ALMOST cool, actually.

I still would like to get a new fan though, for my comfort Suggestions?

http://www.silenxusa.com/productcart/pc/mainIndex.asp This is all I use as they are SUPER! quiet. Many here will bash Silenx and there products and I admit they are pricey, BUT try a SilenX fan and you will wonder why you ever used a different one.

My stock AMD fan kept my CPU as cool (at least according to SpeedFan) as my new Swiftech MC64V. For that reason, the first thing I'd look at is your case and PSU. Cheap cases often mean poor ventilation. Ensure the path from the front intake fans on your case to the rear exhaust fans is relatively unobstructed. This is the time to use zip ties, sleeving, or wire loom to tidy up your cables to make this a reality, and route them out of the path of airflow. Also, a cheap power supply can often be strained by a good system, and result in higher temperatures. I'd much rather have a brand-name power supply with a high efficiency rating, such as an Enermax Noisetaker, Antec Neo, or PC Power & Cooling if you have the cash.
I'd replace the stock fan on your Geforce with an Artic Cooling NV Silencer 5. I have one myself, and this has lowered ambient case temperatures as well as the temps on my Geforce 6800, and it's quieter. Lower ambient case temperatures mean that your CPU won't get quite as hot. Also, if you have empty spots for fans in your case, make use of them. If you want quiet, my preference goes either to the low-speed Panaflos, or the Vantec Stealths, quieter yet but slightly less airflow and the Panaflos never ever die.

For reference, I'm running an Antec P160 case with the two stock 120mm Antec fans, a Panaflo L1A 120mm fan in a custom blowhole on top, the Swiftech MC64V with a Delta low-noise 80mm fan, and an Enermax Noisetaker AX power supply with 80/92mm fans (I hope to replace those with quieter ones in the next few months). My CPU is running stock, and Speedfan reports idle temps of 36-37C.

Oh, one other question...is your 3500+ a Winchester or a Newcastle core? The Newcastle probably runs slightly warmer, and so compared to Winchester 3500+ CPU's your temps may seem a little warm when they aren't.

Is your HSF fan pushing or pulling air? Make sure your HSF and cpu spreader are making good contact. For this apply your paste to the heatspreader, seat your HSF and then take off your HSF. Look at the base and see if the paste made good contact (no dry spots). Your temp in bios is usually not indicative of the "real" temp but is usually in the ballpark.

The serial on the heatspreader will have a BI in it. BI=Winchester.

This will give you all the info on your CPU without you having to take it out and read the core.

The HSF is exhausting air? That is the way it came. It is retail AMD HSF. I did not use thermal paste because I did not have it at the time, I only used the thermal pad that is in place on the bottom of the stock HSF. Perhaps these are part of my problem. I will pick up some thermal paste and try it out. Any other suggestions other than Silenx fan?

I recommend pushing air onto the HSF. Definitely axe that thermal pad and get ya some AS5. As far as fans, again it depends on your case (size and location), your wallet, and your preferences for silence. I'm assuming your fans are all 80mm's. Panaflo's, Papst, Nexus, Coolermaster, Thermaltake are a few and there are many others. Pannies will give you just about the best airflow and silence you can find with the exception of the Silenx's which have decent cfm's, and are the quietest you will ever find.

It is indeed a NewCastle. Does this mean anything other than it runs hotter? How much hotter than a Winchester? Which is better?
