I have lots of questions on this myself and be monitoring this thread. Thanks for posting.

I know that a semicondictor diode with a constant current flowing through it has a voltage across it that is a function of temperature. The voltage drops approximately by 2mV for every degree Centigrade.

I believe that there is a diode on the CPU for this purpose. However, the voltage in itself is useless. It needs to be converted to a digital number. It also needs to be calibrated. Those should be done by something else other than the diode itself.

I wonder if the Winbond chip on the P4P800 deluxe motherboard does the conversion. Or if the conversion is done by the CPU itself!

i have no idea about those conversions. I know i have a P4p800 2.8 and my cpu is sometimes colder than the case.

Now CPU 38C
Motherboard 37C
this is idle

never goes over 50 at full constant load

There are MOSFET transistors on the motherboard that get really hot. They are located between the AGP slot and the adjacent PCI slot. They can burn your finger if you touch them.
That is why the motherboard temperature is higher than the CPU temperature at idle.
Those transistors are part of switching voltage regulators. They are supposed to be hot!

In other words, the motherboard is supposed to be hotter than the CPU at idle!
