Temperature Monitor

I am going to buy a CompuNurse digital thermometer to monitor the temp of my CPU. In the insturctions on Plycon's page it says

"In the case of monitoring your CPU - place the thermal probe beside the CPU's slug - NOT between the Heatsink and the slug. Placing the probe between the two will easily break the probe (since it isn't perfectly flat)."

What are they calling the slug? Has anyone done this to an Athlon? Have any pictures?

Any help appreciated

Search for the user "technonut" he has some good pictures of how to setup the temp probe.

hmmm... search for "sensor" or "thermistor" and "technonut" in either General Hardware, or CPUs and Overclocking.... that might help.

Someone looking for me? :)

The picture of my installed probe is Here Make sure that you monitor the temperature immediately after installation to ensure that the heatsink is flush against the core.

I am either looking at the Digital Doc II or the Digital Doc III. The Digital Doc II has four sensorr, one is used to power some internal fan thing. The Digital Doc III has eight. Both can turn fans on at a certain temp. I am definately gonna put one on my CPU, probably one on my video card, and probably one on either my MOBO or my 7200 RPM HDD. Where else would it be nice to monitor? Would it be better to monitor my MOBO or my HDD should I just get the Digital Doc III and monitor both?

Thanks for the help

just wondering technonut, is there any damage risk to placing the thermistor so close to the cpu core, i guess you have to make sure you are clear of resistors?

Placing the probe against the core is what you want for the most accurate reading. (Still not 100% accurate, but pretty close) It will not harm anything that I am aware of. Please note that where I have mine placed is the only position that would not interfere with my Alpha HSF fitting flush against the core.

About the Digital Doc 3's, I am happy with mine. I have sensors on my processor, mobo, hard drives, video card, etc.. Rather than explain all of the features myself, there is a good review Here that will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Okay after reading those pages, I have one question, how or rather where do you hook them up to monitor your HDD, Video MOBO???

On a hard drive without a heatsink on it, just put the probe on the top of the drive around the platter area held with frag tape. On my video card, I have a probe frag taped to the back of the core. I replaced the northbridge heatsink on my KT7 recently, and since the heatsink does not cover the entire chip area, I have a probe frag taped to an exposed corner. I have one frag taped on the back of the motherboard, and one just hanging in the upper part of my full tower case.

2 on the hard drives
1 on the processor
1 on the back of the video card core
1 on the northbridge
1 on the back of the mobo
1 hanging in the case

Is it overkill? Probably :) Do I enjoy being able to monitor all of those temps? Yes :)

Okay,

will the frag tape hurt any of the components? Meaning if it touches the PCB and the chip will it short or will the tape turn to goo from heat and permeate the PCB?

Thanks again you have been a tremendous help with this project

No, the frag tape has not harmed anything, and the probes are encased, so nothing will short out.

TEchnonut you know anything about this temp monitor?

THis canadian company carries it and it has a nice indiglo backlight display with two fans on either side
