Temperature - How high is too high?

I own a Pentium 800EB on MSI 6337 (815E Pro) motherboard and I didn't use any extra fan for my casing and CPU. I use PC Alert III (motherboard monitor program provided) to determine the temperature and I found that my CPU temperature is always 49 (first boot) to 55 Celcius (after running for an hour). Is it normal?

BTW, is this program reliable? Any other software that provides more accurate result?

Thanks and hope to hear from you.

your temp is too high, try to check between your cpu and the heatsink installed properly or not! i am not sure about the program, i think the most accurate temp is from bios :)

high, but not dangerous yet. After strenous use I recommend to my customers you should not get above 52c. Transmigration does not occur to 80c so you are still way below that. Try some thermal paste between the processor and heat sink, add a case fan, or buy a more robust heatsink and fan. BTW i usually go by the bios for the most accurate temp.

The MSI i815 motherboard I'm using now always reports high temps too. I also have an Asus P3V4X, so when I tested my CPU in that board, it reported a lower temp. I believe it is how the MSI i815 reports the temps. My temps get up into the upper 50s with this board, but in the P3V4X it stays in the upper 40s. The CPU is totally stable in the MSI board at over a Gigahertz, so I'm not worried.

Thanks for the replies.

han888 & techs:
I get into the bios and check the temperature. However, it was still the same (around 49C during first boot).

techs:
I noticed that there is a white square 'sticker' below the heatsink when the processor first arrived. Is it 'thermal paste'? However, one day I checked the heatsink and noticed that some parts of the 'sticker' had slipped off. Will it cause the temperature to raise? Where can I get the replacement of that 'sticker'?

AdamK47:
Maybe you are right. My friend who got a Gigabyte i815 motherboard also have temperature around 40C only (with P3-800EB) after a long play.

if its a sticker, its a pad (ie doesnt trasmit heat very well)

scrape that junk off , maybe even sand/polish the sink , and apply thermal grease from radio snack

guaranteed to lower yours temp

rigor3, you selling the radio shank stuff or what? I almost had the big one here...maybe the problem's with his case cooling? cwchan, is your puter in an open area where it gets plenty of air? Do you have a couple case fans? Quick Silver is the best when it comes to grease... Radio Shank....ack!!!!!!!!!

Which is the best way to apply the grease on the heatsink? Just put a few drops on the center of the heatsink (bottom), or apply it to whole surface?

kmike75:
I put my casing inside my room, against an opened windows... I don't have any extra case cooling fan inside my casing.
