Well this is the first time I haven't had a job as a college/high school student during a long break, and it sucks. I went to a local college and worked at a job at an ISP in the same area for 4 years, and recently transferred with Junior status to a university. I'm back for my turkey break, which starts tonight and lasts for all of next week, but I've got next to nothing to do.
Rewind 2.5 weeks from now. I filled out applications for both the local Walmart as well as a Best Buy 20 minutes away. Only Best Buy called back thus far. The lady called up my secondary number (my dorm), and the question she asked was "I saw you mentioned a friend referred you?" My response was that I've had a few friends that were managers in the PC departments at other best buys, and that's why I marked that down. She then asked if I could go to an interview later that week, which I replied that I couldn't because I was at school then, and I couldn't do an interview until my break due to classes. I told her that any date including or after Friday (which is today) I could start work or come in for an interview. Her response was that she would call me on Friday then.
Right away I could sense the BS with that statement, but I played and said that sounded great.
So, it's Friday, just about to turn Saturday, and no call. I can't say I didn't expect it. I called up the Best Buy around dinner time today asking to speak to her and she was out, and is only in on weekdays during normal business hours. So off I go on Monday to the store and speak to her personally (which is what the person on the other end recommended I do). I won't go in and talk/ask the manager more than once "if I got the job", etc, since I'm well aware I'm probably getting the runaround.
Now, I don't exactly understand her actions since I (thought anyway) that I made it clear on the application I was looking for temporary employment. But due to the fact that the application was online, there may have been lack of an extra areas where I could put that kind of information in there. Honestly, I don't exactly remember everything that was on the application, but it seemed more like a test with all the "honesty/stealing/ethic" type questions.
Any recommendations for anything productive jobwise over turkey/x-mas breaks or temporary employment? I'm thinking about hitting a mall about 20m from here and asking tons of stores if they need temporary help.
Edit: Just to think, I bet summer is going to be much, much worse, since retail stores won't be needing the temporary employment. I had it lucky where I was previously, too bad I can't go back for temporary employment since it isn't needed (my old position was already filled).
