Temp issues. Which temps to trust?

Ok been having some temp. issues with my new C2D build. I have an E6400 at stock everything with an Abit Quadgt.

Ok. The first weird part. My temps at idle at stock everything is around 47-50C with the stock heatsink AND with an Ultra90.

These temps according to Speedfan and Coretemp. How trustworthy are these? I mean, they should both be recording the temps from the same place right?

Well, if I load up Abits own program UGURU OR if I reboot and go to my bios, it says my temps are about 39-40C. Thats quite a big difference. I would think the bios is more likely correct over two software programs? The temps are not dropping 7-10C within 10 seconds of a reboot right?

AFAIK, uGuru doesn't report the actual temperatures of the CPU, not sure how that works but uGuru is not trustworthy, not sure about coretemp but I don't use that. Try IntelTAT (google it) that reads straight from the CPU and is always correct.

Doesn't Intel TAT only work with Intel chipsets? I tried installing it on my 680i motherboard, and it would not run.

no it works on my E6600. On my Q its a different story. Only loads up 2/4 cores. LOL.


On Intels, this is how i present it:

Coretemp 0.95 ~ Coretemp 0.94 ~ Speedfan ~ Everest ~ TAT

Coretemp 0.95 people say the most accurate, but it crashes on a lot of people. I use .94 On my quads, and C2D's.

On AMD, i use Rightmark.

My temps go up n' down like a YoYo when rebooting - usually up - amazing, but true!

I often see cpu temps go up on bios screens and lower idling in windows.

I figured it was probably because most modern OS send the cpu the HLT instruction that tells the cpu to essentially power down and do nothing when its not needed.
I don't think the bios does this, hence the extra heat.
