Telling one particular desktop icon to "stay put"

Windows XP sp1a

Here is the jist of it:

I'm no longer using Internet Explorer. I am using FireFox.
As far as desktop icons go, IE was always 5th one down, all the way to the left (right under the recycling bin).

I've told explorer not to display the IE icon anymore so now that space is free.

my FireFox desktop icon is just a link to the .exe which i have stored elsewhere.

The problem is this:

I am always resorting my desktop icons. ("arrange by date, arrange by name, etc...).
Everytime I do this, the FireFox icon ends up somewhere else. My desktop is usually cluttered so I have a hard time spotting it right away (plus, i'm just in the habit of going to "the fifth icon down, all the way to the left" to open up my browser.

My question is "how can i tell this icon to *stay put*, but allow the rest of my icons to be resorted when I need them to.

How can i make this icon work the *same exact way* as "my computer, my documents, network places, etc..." in that it is always stuck to that one spot.

and... i'd like to do this without having to run a program. I don't mind using something to set this all up, but once the icon is in place, i'd like it to stay in place.

thanks. 🙂

(btw, i have the firefox shortcut on my taskbar already, but i specifically want to be able to access the icon from my desktop also).

Look for a prg called WinTidy. It was from PC Magazine. It handles icon placement very nicely. Remembers individual arrangements per resolution and does some other neat crap like switch your desktop icons to small mode (like in an explorer list view... i use this meself).

I find that the easiest way to keep a hold of all your frequently used icons is to put them in your quick launch in your tool bar. They never move, and no need for double clicking.

LOL, just thinking of this thread, isn't it strange that everyone has their own personal way their PC has to be. I bet everytime any of re-install windows (or whatever OS you use), you put your desktop the exact way it was before. Except for the occaisional background picture change.......and even thats rare. I'm quite anal about some of the sh!t on my PC....especially the way my mp3's are organized.

I've been having a hard time getting WinTidy to run on my computer. I get an error regarding an "unnamed icon" on my desktop, and the error will not go away.

What I'm looking for though is something more in terms of a registry edit or something.

Like, whatever it is in windows that tells those icons (my computer, my documents etc) to stay still no matter how I sort them (either by date or name), I'd liket to apply to my shortcut to FireFox.

I dunno about the prob you're having w/ WinTidy... i've never had any probs w/ it. Something much leaner you could try is the Layout NT Shell Extension. This is from microsoft, and was part of the NT Resource Kit, methinks. It just adds 2 context menu entries to the My Computer icon.. "Save Desktop Icon Layout" and "Restore Desktop Icon Layout". Pretty simple. Does nothing else. PM me if you can't find it.

I know where you're comin' from w/ the desktop/mp3 thing. I just last week finished re-tagging all of my mp3 collection. Years ago when I started ripping my music, I settled on the following structure:

\Artist - Album\Artist - Album - Track# - Title.mp3

This worked well until I decided that the alphabetized order of the albums was getting on my nerves. So I restructured to:

\Artist - Year - Album\" " " ".mp3

Chronologicalizationatically Orderificated. Yeah.

another way is if you really want that icon to stand out. Change the icon pic to a very nasty and disgusting color that stands out among all of them. You'll sure not to miss it

Heres my mps layout:

"Artist Name" - "Song Title".mp3

If its a video:
(Video) "Artist Name" - "Song Title".*

i also prefer to keep the icons off my desktop completely and put important icons in the quick launch bar. its easier I think, just click.

Funny... you know, I was gonna say 'I like to keep folder shortcuts on my destkop so I can easily drop files onto them, which I can't do w/ the quicklaunch bar...", then I thought, hmm... I've never TRIED that, have I? Sure enuf, you CAN. Interesting, that.
