Edit: Since my question was answered, I changed the title since some of the stories below are hilarious.

I don't remember how many feather dusters my mom went thru beating on me and my brother, but sometimes she resorted to chopsticks. Those hurt like a mofo since they aren't as flexible as the duster (which bends a little when it strikes skin, thus lessening the blow slightly). My mom finally stopped whacking us when she figured out she couldn't hit hard enough for us to consider it punishment anymore, hehe.

Of course my dad was more efficient, a simple rap with his knuckles to the top of my head was more than enough to make me stop whatever shenanigans I was up to.

What's the etiquette on when to use the two different ways of saying "Thank you" in Cantonese? There's "Mmmm Goi" and "Dow Jeh", I seem to vaguely remember my mom teaching me the difference on when to use one or the other, but that's locked away in the back recesses of my mind right alongside my numerous beatings with the feather duster...

"mm goy" is used when someone does you a favor.
"do jeh" is used when someone gives you a gift.
That's the basic usage

ahh... the memory of the chicken feather duster... What memories it bring back. I recall my mom chasing me all the way up to the roof of an 8 story building we lived in.

/me recoils into fetal position...

ApacheXMD pretty much sums it up.

Ahhhh, the infamous chicken feather duster.... That brough up some "fond" memory, except mine was a chicken feather duster without the feather (cheaper), it was my grandmother who does the chasing, and by chasing I mean from the kitchen to the living room (I lived in a 20+ stories building, no way I am running to the roof.)

oh god the feather duster, something that should send most chinese to therapy:) i was an evil child though, i swatted my grandma back:) as for the etiquette question, its been bothering me too:)

and for you ppl that don't have experience with feather dusters, it hurts a lot more then it sounds like. the duster stick is made of bamboo or some other dense wood. you get wacked with the wood only side:) its like a mini caning sorta hehe

I actually got paddled with the wooden flat spatula/spoon which my dad bought from Japan. Either that or it was the metal one...:(

Maybe it was because I speak Mandarin...;)

My parents didn't beat me with a feather duster.

From what I read on here, it would suck to grow up in an Asian family.

My mom was Thai, dad was American. My mom beat me with wooden spoons the ones with long handles. Dad spanked me with a belt, although neither did it much. I was always such a good kid! Funny story...
for some reason at school I had a fascination with giving people the middle finger (this was in the second grade). I did it once and a teacher caught me doing it and called my mom. Mom went to the school, talked with the teacher and then left. When I got home, she took me by my arm, told me to put my hand out, grabbed the biggest knife she had (a butchers type knife) and threatened to cut off my middle finger if I did it again. Needless to say, I didn't. My dad was on TDY at the time in Germany, and wasn't too happy with mom when he found out what she had done when he got back.
Ahh the memories... my all-american wife tells me I was abused (jokingly of course).

No what sucks is disciplining your child nowadays is a jailable offense.

I remeber what my Aunt said one time when her son mentioned calling a number to report her if he were ever spanked...

"You do that and when I get out I'll really whoop you good"

I agree entirely...spare the rod and spoil the child. Let's let family raise a child and not the state.

* note I recognize the difference between a spanking and actual child abuse.

Ah...the "guy moh soh"...I have personally never got hit by one. My dad used to get hit by it, when he was in an orphanage awaiting adoption by his sister. I just got chopsticks, a yardstick, or a belt.

The sad thing is that spanking doesn't really hurt...compared to a feather duster or a belt. Yet so many "abuse hotlines" are set up. If you're getting beat in the head and breaking walls n crap, that's one thing. Getting a tiny spanking cause you screwed something up isn't that bad...
