i don't think anyone asked "why Utah?" is there something special that your wife is looking for and she sees it there?

She heard UT might be nice, then found OWATC in Ogden. She needs to finish up her BA, and likes what she has read about it so far.

My gf and I joke that there are 2 religions in Utah, LDS and outdoors. Anything else and you have a hard time fitting in.
That's about right... I was in SLC for grad school recently and I didn't have a problem fitting in as non-LDS. Most/all of my friends were into outdoor stuff though, and were transplants.
Loved it in Utah.

Go to Utah and spend some time there. Utah is very close to the bottom of my list. Second from the bottom to be exact. It's very tough to justify living in Utah when it's surrounded by states that put it to shame. Then you factor in the weirdness of the people, the weather, and the roads it's really not that appealing. My last camping trip I planned my trip so that I didn't have to spend the night in that state. The only good thing about Utah is that it can be very beautiful. However so can its neighbors.

That's complete BS. I siding with Boomer here. SLC is the center of the mormon cult. you are either with them or an outsider. They tolerate outsiders, but are not friendly towards them. Unless you have lived in other parts of the country, you wont understand the difference between that though.

I've lived in SLC and this is absolutely correct.

The OP should look at western Colorado if he wants something better than Oklahoma. There are jobs available for those who aren't afraid of physical labor. The urban office types won't fit in but outdoors lovers will.

Just to pile on with the Utah thing... I've got some relatives in SLC that aren't Mormons, but the mentality still rubs off. The thing that bugs me about people in Utah is that they look right through you when they talk to you like you're not really there. It's weird!

Never been there, but, I know I wouldn't want to live there, it's too dry for my likes...

Last year, one of my roomates was a random off of craigslist. The guy had randomly moved from Utah to Pittsburgh.

Weirdest guy I have ever met in my life. No respect for personal space, and indescribably weird in ever facet imaginable. Pretty sure he was gay as well, but who the hell knows.

Based entirely on that, stay away from Utah, except for outdoorsy vacations.

i live a few hours from salt lake and would move there given the chance. i have yet to have a problem with lds people, and i work with quite a few and have made some good friends.

we have spent many days and weekends down there as it is the closest city to us. there is a great food culture, great parks, great downtown area to walk around. Gateway mall is lots of fun. We have been to concerts there too.

the liqueur laws are somewhat annoying but its really not that bad unless you are a real alcoholic. you may have to order food with your drinks, but that's about the worst of it. One of our favorite places is The Bayou on State St. Great Cajun food and a beer list is many pages with beers from all over the world. they even have Guinness on tap. you are close to great mountians, a short drive from LV, jackson hole, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Vail, Park City, Moab, Ouray.... Salt Lake is a medium size city with big city feel to me.

cost of living is somewhere in the middle. cheaper than here, but more expensive i am sure than OK. Just like any city in the country.

Saying 'Hello' from Park City, Utah. I love it here. I commute everyday to SLC, which is a 40 min drive.

I am a non mormon, I do fit in Park City very easily. There is some feeling of isolationism with local communities, but I am sure you could find places to do with the family.

Very good places to pick from would be Park City, Draper, Moab, and Wendover.

Wait, what?!? Wendover is the shittiest shithole in all of shitholedom. Wendover is such a shithole that even rural, small-town shitholes in Nevada make fun of Wendover. And that's just the western side of Wendover, the part that's in NV. East Wendover is so shitholish that there was a push for it to secede from Utah to Nevada because West Wendover was so much better off.

I've taken trips to Utah and it has some amazing scenery. The religion there from what I hear sounds a little sketchy. I'd prefer a place that is somewhere in the middle as far a religion goes instead of crazy religious or crazy non-religious people.

Can you really believe somebody who has so much hate as Boomer D? If he acts like 1/10th of the asshole in real life as he acts in here then I can guarantee the mormons treat him "prejudice" because he's a total butthole and not because he's not a mormon.

Salt Lake city does not feel like a mormon town at all. Provo on the other hand...

there is a reason that the mormons were run out of three separate regions, all the way to the end of the country at the point of armed, angry mobs.

No sane community will tolerate their bullshit, and that hasn't changed in 100+ years.

Picking between Utah and Oklahoma is like debating about moving from the seventh circle of hell to the eighth circle of hell for a change of pace.

Fuck...pick ANY state that borders either Utah or Oklahoma and you'd be happier.
