Tell me why I shouldn't buy this 37" Panasonic Plasma

In another thread I posted that I bought a 37" Magnavox LCD hdtv. The colors are good but after watching a movie on it, I was not happy with the blacks.

I don't watch television very often. I have been avoiding plasma because of the burn-in problem, but after researching more it looks like that typically happens to people who use their sets intensively. So I will probably be safe with a plasma.

The best one I have come across might be the Panasonic TH-37PX60U. Its the new generation of plasmas, has a 10000:1 contrast ratio, a few other features to help clean up the picture and reduce power usage, and has a builtin hdtv tuner.

Even with the highest end LCD hdtvs, I'm afraid the blacks will still only come in 2nd to the plasma. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Take a look at the newer LCDs.

Sharp LC-37D42U (NOT the D40U)
The latest Samsung looks good too.
I haven't seen the newest LG panel yet but they are always up there.

Mitsubishi LT37231 is awesome. Best looking 37" LCD I've ever seen. And it's 1080p.

Magnavox sucks. So does Westinghouse, Vizio and most other LCD panels. Stay away from the cheap stuff.

my bf family just bought a 50-something inch panasonic plasma and it is amazing. It got great reviews and it was bought at a place that only deals with high-end tvs.

You shouldn't get it because you can get the 42" model for around $200 more. If not less. But depending on your room size maybe the 37" is a better fit. Either way you're making a great choice on a TV, both are great sets.

You shouldn't buy a 37" Plasma because you should go for a 50"+ DLP instead.

I say to go for it. I bought a Samsung LN-S4095 (40" LCD, same panel as Sony XBR2) last June and I returned it after a month. Bright, colorful images were beautiful, but when it came to blacks, it was horrible. When I tried to watch a darker movie, I could see splotches of lighter spots on the screen and everything looked washed out.

I recently got another Samsung, but this time it's a 42" plasma (S4253). It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than the LCD. The Panasonics are supposed to have excellent image quality (better than my Samsung) so I think you'll be happy.

I'll only get DLP if it doesn't utilize the color wheel. The rainbow effect bugs my eyes out.

so what will you be primarily using this set for

Occasional tv shows, sometimes movies. Some day I hope to get a gaming console, but even then I won't play that often.

Sounds like you don't need to invest in a serious TV then. This is what I have, wihtout the PiP:samsung
I got it for under 1 grand, and am very happy with it. But based on your usage...I would want to pay no more than $600-800 for a set.

You shouldn't get the 37" because the same TV only in 42" is only 60$ more!

The 42" has just as many pixels, so all I'm doing is stretching them out. I really don't need something that big...

..Sony Bravia compares favorably with any plasma. For the longest time I thought they were plasma. They come in 40" and 46".

for those usesthe 42" panny will be very good as long as you have control over the lighting (windows, lamps, etc) in your room.. i don't know about you but the reflective glass panels on plasmas bugs me but it could be a non-issue in your house

I have a Panasonic 37" EDTV plasma (480p), a panasonic 32" LCD, and a Olevia 32" LCD (both 720p).

When viewing HD content, there is no comparison. The lack of resolution in the EDTV is overcome by the vastly superior color and black levels of the plasma. I can only imagine the 720p pannys are even better.

I <3 my panny plasma.

If your having to control your lighting you may as well go projector and enjoy over 100 inches of pure HT bliss, and its cheaper, with what you save you can buy a theater pop corn popper :D
