my trusty old Athlon550mhz that I managed to overclock to a whooping 850mhz though I'v had it running at 750mhz for most of its lifespan is failing.... or it might be the motherboard. Anyhow I need a new CPU, motherboard and RAM.

I dont need isa slots, I need 1 com port, though I might get by if I just bought a usb cradle for my ipaq instead of this com port one I have, also I need one ps2 port for my keyboard.

So what should I buy?

what do you want to spend?
- not sure what it would be in dollars, but lets just keep it reasonable :)

what do you do on the computer?
- Graphics, programing, Internet, Games

want to overclock?
- Nope, dont want my next setup to fail on me also ;)

do you multi-task or game a lot?
- I multitask more than I play games

Edit: also, what other components will you be using?
- 1x sblive, 1x udma controler(wont need it if I get a motherboard with more controlers), 1x nic, 1x dvddrive, 1x cdrw, 4x hd's, 1x usb mouse, 1x ps2 keyboard, 1x ipaq cradle(com), 1x usb printer, 1x usb digital camera. And I think thats it.

No overclocking..i'd probably go AMD

XP 1800 - $92 from tcwo
AK35GT-Raid(KT266A)$80+8 shipping from newegg
512MB Mushkin PC2100 - Weekend Special $74 +6 shipping for ground, 9 for 2day

$260ish if you buy it from those places..

Didn't pick the 333's because all of the ones with raid are much more expensive and the performance difference is nothing noticable..

They don't ship overseas :( Mushkin might, but I doubt the others do..even if Mushkin does, it's probably hella expensive..Do you have an online store there that has those sort of prices?

Edit: Actually, if you want to use your UDMA controller, you could pick up the MSI KT3 Ultra, it's the KT333, 78 + 4 shipping(even though you probably can't order it from them) and it has 4 USB(2 on an expansion next to a PCI slot)

everything I buy here is alot more expensive, thats why I prefer buying it online.
like a xp1800 costs here about 18.000kr and thats about $180, and that is enough difference to make me want to order it from someplace else.

Ouch..how much does it cost to ship a motherboard + cpu + ram overseas? $30? Would probably be worth it to pay someone, have them order it, then ship it to you..just have to hope that everything works..

I'll try to find a place that ships overseas..

Here's what I'd go for:

XP 2000+
EPoX 8K3A (non "+" version)
512MB of PC2700

The reason I say go AMD is cause since you wont be ocing, then the 1.6A is not worth it and a similarly performing (compared to the 2000+) 2.0A should be more expensive than the 2000+. So thats what I'd go for.

Btw Czar, I notice no mention about a vid card, I assume this is cause thats reserved by Parhelia?;)

Oh and about KT333 mobo's, the non-RAID versions of all these boards really are no more expensive than their KT266A counterparts, thats why I say get em. However, if where you are, the 266A's are cheaper, Furor's right, you won't lose too much by going with a 266A board.

No reason to buy the PC2700 when he won't be overclocking.
2000+ is sort of a stupid idea..it's like $30 over over a 1900+ and 50 over a 1800+..no noticable gains other than benchmarks.

If you have the cash to spend go for it..but then you'd have to unlock the athlon XP

8K3A is a good choice, but it's mainly for overclocking, that's why I chose the MSI for it's features..it has the extra USB addon, and is pretty cheap

Edit: I guess i'll add this before anyone asks..the reason not to buy pc2700 is because asynchronous mode isn't working right in all of the kt333 reviews i've seen, performance difference is about 100 points in benchmarks..

You may have a better chance of checking out the FS/FT forum for a used bundle and someone that would ship to you..I'd sell you mine, but it's overclocked (200x8) though no risk of peripheral damage with Xp333 dividers..I would love to try a new thoroughbred when they come out with a 8K3A :)

You said 18.000 kr, thats somewhere in Scandinavia.

First of all 180$ is more like 1800 kr.

And if your from Sweden or Norway try Komplett.se/Komplett.no

They are pretty cheap, at least the swedish one has a bundle of:

MSI KT3-Ultra-C
AMD XP1800+
DDR-DIMM PC2100 256MB
coolermaster fan
-------------------------
3439 SEK = 330$

And you could add some more mem to it if you feel like it:)
