Tell me what these Win 2000 versions are.

I got a quote for this (Canadian $):

(MS WIN 2000 PRO License V5.0 Media Kit) $30.60
(MS XP PRO Upgrade) if upgrading from WIN 95 or 98 - $87.00
(MS Windows 2000 Upgrade) if upgrading from NT - $77.00

I have NT already on this computer with the NT disc contents right on the hard drive. We have an NT licence for this computer but no actual disc. I want to upgrade to Windows 2000.

OK, will the Windows 2000 Upgrade disc be fine for me to upgrade to Win 2000, and will it be fine if I have to reformat in the future? In other words, can I do a full install with this disc alone? (Oh, and I don't need XP Pro, but even if I did, it doesn't seem this is the right version.)

Also, what is the "MS WIN 2000 Pro Licence V5.0 Media Kit"?

(This is through our purchasing dept. and I'd call, but I doubt I'd be getting further useful information (like AnandTech-type useful).)

A Win 2k upgrade would load fine over NT if you do an upgrade, NOT a fresh install. You can do a fresh install with the upgrade disk by putting in the NT CD to prove that you own it. If you don't have the CD you will not be able to do a fresh install now or for a reinstall in the future. You need either the NT disk or the full version of 2k.

Don't know what Win 2k pro v5 is, sorry.

The Media Kit is just the CD only - it comes with no license. It is for companies that purchased their license separately and just need an extra install disc or want to save a few bucks by just purchasing licenses only and only the number of discs they need. The MS Windows 2000 Upgrade is the license you need to upgrade. It probably does not come with media, just the license only. I don't know who your vendor is - the descriptions are usually more clear.
